Farmers’ March Paused Till Feb 29, Protesters To Hold Ground At Borders

A candle march is scheduled for today, followed by seminars on farmer-related issues tomorrow. New Delhi: Farmer leaders on Friday announced that the future course of action regarding their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march will be decided on February 29. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), spearheading the protests, outlined a list of activities planned for the next week. Until then, the farmers are determined to hold their ground at two protest sites on the Punjab-Haryana border – Shambhu and Khanauri. A candle march is scheduled for today, followed by seminars on farmer-related issues tomorrow. On February 26, the protestors intend to burn effigies of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and ministers. In addition, several meetings of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha forums are slated for the subsequent two days. Farmers Protest, Farmer Leader Rakesh Tikait’s “If Government Creates Problem” Warning

New Delhi: Rakesh Tikait – a key figure in the 2020/21 protests against the government’s “black farm laws” – has backed the second ‘Delhi Chalo’ agitation, which began Tuesday with tear gas being fired at Shambhu on the Punjab-Haryana border, triggering clashes between farmers and police forces. Mr Tikait issued an ominous warning to the ruling BJP – scrambling to contain protests that have erupted weeks before a general election – “if government creates a problem for these farmers…” “There are several farmer unions and they have different issues… If the government creates a problem for farmers marching to Delhi, we are not far from them. We are in support of them…” #WATCH | On farmers’ ‘Delhi chalo’ protest, farmer leader Rakesh Tikait says, “MSP guarantee law and Swaminathan Committee report, Electricity amendment bill and debt waiver are the issues of the farmers across the country. Large Gatherings Banned In Delhi Till March 12 Ahead Of Farmers’ Mega March

New Delhi: Large gatherings have been banned across Delhi for a month – till March 12 – ahead of a mega protest by farmers starting Tuesday. Over 200 farmer unions – around 20,000 farmers in all – are expected to converge on the national capital in the next few days, in a potential replay of the violent protests in 2020/21 over “black” farm laws passed (and then scrapped) by the central government. Identical orders have been in force in the northeast districts since Saturday – after farmers, who are expected to roll in 200 tractors – from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab launched the protest. The farmers have multiple demands, including enactment of a law to guarantee minimum support price, or MSP, for their crops. Legal assurances for the MSP scheme was part of the protests four years ago, which were called off after the government reached a deal with the agitating farmers. The other demands are implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, pensions for farmers and farm labourers, waiving of farm debts, and withdrawal …
