Amid ongoing farmers protest at the Haryna-Punjab border, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday made a big announcement and told the Rajya Sabha that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government will ensure that all farm produce is purchased at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). “This is Modi govt’s guarantee,” he said.  The statement from the minister could be seen as part of the broader policy efforts by the Modi government to address the issues faced by the agricultural sector.  Farmers begin foot march to Delhi. Image Source : PTI Protesting farmers on the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march were stopped at the Shambhu border as police officials claimed that the famers did not have any permission to enter Haryana. In a massive development, police on Friday used tear gas to disperse the protesting farmers at Haryana-Punjab Shambhu Border. The farmers have announced to march towards the National Capital-Delhi over their various demands. The development comes after these protesting farmers on the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march were stopped at the Shambhu border as police officials claimed that the famers did not have any permission to enter Haryana. New Delhi: Farmer leaders on Friday announced that the future course of action regarding their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march will be decided on February 29. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), spearheading the protests, outlined a list of activities planned for the next week. Until then, the farmers are determined to hold their ground at two protest sites on the Punjab-Haryana border – Shambhu and Khanauri. A candle march is scheduled for today, followed by seminars on farmer-related issues tomorrow. On February 26, the protestors intend to burn effigies of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and ministers. New Delhi: Tear gas has been fired at farmers massing at the Shambhu border point between Punjab and Haryana – a key meeting point for farmers from each state heading to Delhi as part of their ‘Delhi Chalo’ call. Visuals showed huge plumes of smoke – making visibility almost impossible – and hundreds of farmers, as well as media personnel, running helter-skelter to the sound of tear gas shells being fired. The shelling – the first signs of violence – broke as the clock struck noon and the farmers began their push to Delhi. An estimated two dozen shells were fired, despite no immediate signs of provocation. Visuals from the Shambhu border – over 200 km from Delhi – also showed the police and security personnel – already outnumbered – dropping smoke bombs from drones to disperse the farmers.
