Policeman Injured, Tear Gas Shells Fired As Cops, Farmers Clash In Haryana

Chandigarh: A police officer was injured Friday in a pitched battle between protesting farmers and cops in Khedi Chwpata in Haryana’s Hisar. Visuals showed a chaotic and volatile situation; police – escorted by riot personnel in full gear – can be seen taking people into custody while angry farmers surrounded them threateningly, shouting and jeering. The violence – in which tear gas shells were fired and police resorted to a lathi charge, while protesters threw stones – broke after the farmers were stopped from marching to Khanauri on the Punjab border to join thousands of their colleagues who have gathered there, and at the Shambhu border crossing, ahead of a ‘Delhi Chalo’ march to demand a legal guarantee for MSP, or minimum support price, and waiver of farm loans, pensions, and ollback of increased electricity rates, among other things. Earlier today a 62-year-old farmer died in Khanauri after suffering a cardiac arrest. Darshan Singh was from Punjab’s Bathinda district, and was the second person from Bathinda to have died in these protests; on Wednesday Subhkaran …

Centre’s New 5-Year MSP Proposal. What It Means

Delhi Farmers Protest: Farmers have been protesting the MSP issue since the 2020/21 agitation (File). New Delhi: The deadlock between the government and protesting farmers rolled into a second week Monday, with no definite breakthrough after four rounds of talks but signs of an accord on the horizon. At a meeting late Sunday the government – facing a second round of farmers’ protests, this time just weeks before a general election – relented on the subject of MSP, or minimum support price, proposing a five-year contract to buy pulses, maize, and cotton. The farmers – for whom MSP is a red-flag issue – asked, and were given, 48 hours to confer, and have put ‘Delhi Chalo 2.0’ on hold. A legal assurance for MSP is seen as No.1 on the farmers’ wish list. The two sides met in Chandigarh, with the government represented by three union ministers, including Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. The first signs, though, are not encouraging, with farmer leaders telling NDTV the government must offer guarantees on all 23 crops, and not …

Farmers Protest, Farmer Leader Rakesh Tikait’s “If Government Creates Problem” Warning

New Delhi: Rakesh Tikait – a key figure in the 2020/21 protests against the government’s “black farm laws” – has backed the second ‘Delhi Chalo’ agitation, which began Tuesday with tear gas being fired at Shambhu on the Punjab-Haryana border, triggering clashes between farmers and police forces. Mr Tikait issued an ominous warning to the ruling BJP – scrambling to contain protests that have erupted weeks before a general election – “if government creates a problem for these farmers…” “There are several farmer unions and they have different issues… If the government creates a problem for farmers marching to Delhi, we are not far from them. We are in support of them…” #WATCH | On farmers’ ‘Delhi chalo’ protest, farmer leader Rakesh Tikait says, “MSP guarantee law and Swaminathan Committee report, Electricity amendment bill and debt waiver are the issues of the farmers across the country. Tear Gas Fired At Farmers Marching Towards Delhi At Punjab-Haryana Border

New Delhi: Tear gas has been fired at farmers massing at the Shambhu border point between Punjab and Haryana – a key meeting point for farmers from each state heading to Delhi as part of their ‘Delhi Chalo’ call. Visuals showed huge plumes of smoke – making visibility almost impossible – and hundreds of farmers, as well as media personnel, running helter-skelter to the sound of tear gas shells being fired. The shelling – the first signs of violence – broke as the clock struck noon and the farmers began their push to Delhi. An estimated two dozen shells were fired, despite no immediate signs of provocation. Visuals from the Shambhu border – over 200 km from Delhi – also showed the police and security personnel – already outnumbered – dropping smoke bombs from drones to disperse the farmers. Around 200 farmer unions – and an estimated one lakh farmers from neighbouring Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh – began marching on the national capital Tuesday morning, in a worrying replay of the 2020/21 protests, in …

Large Gatherings Banned In Delhi Till March 12 Ahead Of Farmers’ Mega March

New Delhi: Large gatherings have been banned across Delhi for a month – till March 12 – ahead of a mega protest by farmers starting Tuesday. Over 200 farmer unions – around 20,000 farmers in all – are expected to converge on the national capital in the next few days, in a potential replay of the violent protests in 2020/21 over “black” farm laws passed (and then scrapped) by the central government. Identical orders have been in force in the northeast districts since Saturday – after farmers, who are expected to roll in 200 tractors – from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab launched the protest. The farmers have multiple demands, including enactment of a law to guarantee minimum support price, or MSP, for their crops. Legal assurances for the MSP scheme was part of the protests four years ago, which were called off after the government reached a deal with the agitating farmers. The other demands are implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, pensions for farmers and farm labourers, waiving of farm debts, and withdrawal …
