New Delhi: State-owned NHAI on Wednesday said it has issued directions to all FASTag issuer banks to undertake immediate validation of vehicle registration numbers to enhance the accuracy and reliability of data in the electronic toll collection system. (PTI Photo) NHAI, in a statement, said the decision follows receipt of complaints regarding instances where the VRN (vehicle registration number) captured by FASTag readers does not match the actual registration number displayed on the vehicle number plate. Such discrepancies have the potential to undermine enforcement mechanisms and may lead to revenue evasion and also attract other penal provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, it added. It has been observed that a considerable number of such mismatches are associated with FASTags issued prior to their issuance with the VAHAN database, the statement said. During that period, validation mechanisms were relatively limited and relied more on manual processes, leading to potential inconsistencies in vehicle identification records, it noted. …

In a move towards seamless journey and doing away with long queues, the government has notified a new rule where cash will be discontinued from toll plazas, starting April 10. With the new rule, the government is looking at improving traffic flow, along with easing congestion, minimising disputes and commuters flashing their IDs to skip payment. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Sunday announced a revision in the FASTag annual pass fee for the financial year 2026–27.   The fee has been increased from Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,075 and the revised rate will come into effect from April 1, 2026. “NHAI has announced the revision of the applicable fee for the FASTag Annual Pass from the current Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,075 for the Financial Year 2026–27,” the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways said. According to NHAI, the revision has been made in line with the provisions of the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008. The FASTag Annual Pass has been gaining popularity among private vehicle owners, with more than 56 lakh users currently availing the facility. The revised annual pass will continue to be available for eligible non-commercial vehicles that have a valid FASTag.
