How a terrifying boat prank, a plate of biryani forged Fazil and Nedumudi Venu’s friendship | Malayalam News

Malayalam cinema has produced several legends over the decades, some of whom rank among India’s finest in their respective domains. From iconic directors and actors to extraordinary composers, playback singers, cinematographers, editors, and production designers, the industry has often proven itself an ideal breeding ground for exceptional talents. Among them are a few who started their journeys hand in hand, ascending from the trenches to the throne together. Fazil and Nedumudi Venu are two such people who rose together, eventually becoming legends in Malayalam cinema. While Fazil emerged as one of the greatest writer-directors of all time in the industry, Nedumudi Venu went on to become one of the finest actors Malayalam has ever produced, with both earning nationwide acclaim and recognition in other industries as well. Interestingly, all of this started at SD College in Alappuzha, Kerala, where their friendship blossomed while they were pursuing their undergraduate studies. When Mohanlal blasted Priyadarshan for ‘betraying’ him, spent an Onam in hospital | Malayalam News

5 min readKochiMay 1, 2026 06:17 PM IST Fazil’s directorial debut, Manjil Virinja Pookkal, is often considered a pathbreaking film of its era. The movie was released during the Christmas season of 1980, just over a month after the tragic demise of Malayalam’s first action hero, Jayan. At the time, Ratheesh had yet to take over Jayan’s spot in the trio of superstars, the other two positions being occupied by Sukumaran and Soman. Angry young men were ruling the screens then, and Fazil arrived with a romantic thriller featuring fairly unknown newcomers, including a 20-year-old debutant named Mohanlal. While Shankar and Poornima Bhagyaraj (née Poornima Jayaram) played the lead roles, Mohanlal appeared as the antagonist. Manjil Virinja Pookkal opened to massively favourable responses. According to Manorama Online, the film, mounted on a budget of Rs 7 lakh, ended up collecting Rs 1 crore, making it a huge blockbuster. In all honesty, Mohanlal hasn’t had to look back since then, and even after 46 years, he remains one of the two uncrowned rulers of Malayalam cinema, …

Harikrishnans: Why Mohanlal, Mammootty should have ended up together and let ‘poor’, ‘delusional’ Juhi Chawla live in peace | Malayalam News

Harikrishnans: Why Mohanlal, Mammootty should have ended up together and let ‘poor’, ‘delusional’ Juhi Chawla live in peace | Malayalam News

The first time we see Mohanlal and Mammootty on screen in director Fazil’s Harikrishnans (1998) is after the 15-minute mark. The first act is over, and the inciting incident has taken place. Up until that point, we don’t hear their characters’ names even in passing. In fact, the opening act almost makes one wonder if it’s a children’s film, as it revolves solely around Ammalu (Shamlee), an 11-year-old girl who has arrived in Ponnur for vacation, and her friends. But that’s the brilliance of Fazil, one of the most daring commercial filmmakers in Malayalam cinema history. He never took the beaten path, nor did he follow formulas. While others desperately tried to replicate his films, believing they could use the same ingredients and cook up hits, he simply kept doing his job and (unknowingly) led the way. Sreenivasan once took swipe at Mohanlal for doing Padayappa-like films, said he stopped showing interest in doing films with him, Sathyan Anthikad

5 min readKochiUpdated: Mar 23, 2026 08:53 PM IST While Mohanlal is arguably one of the biggest superstars and finest actors Malayalam cinema has ever seen, there are quite a few people who contributed significantly to his rise. From Fazil, who gave him his first acting role, to the Sibi Malayil-AK Lohithadas duo that earned him his first two National Film Awards, and his frequent collaborators Priyadarshan, Sathyan Anthikad, and Sreenivasan, the list is long. And we haven’t even begun talking about his many extraordinary co-stars who helped him push his boundaries. After commencing his career playing villain roles, Mohanlal transitioned to supporting characters and then to guy-next-door roles, which eventually helped him earn a special place in Malayalees’ hearts. While he has worked with several legendary screenwriters, Sreenivasan was one of the most indispensable figures in his professional journey, as the latter’s movies played a significant part in catapulting him to great heights. From Shalini and her sister Shamlee to Geetu Mohandas, Nazriya Nazim, Pranav Mohanlal, Manjima Mohan, Sanusha, and Arun A Kumar, there are several who transitioned from child artistes to adult actors in Malayalam cinema. Although not all of them achieved the same level of success when they began taking on mature roles, they all remain beloved to Malayalees, thanks to their notable performances as kids. Among those who left a lasting impression on audiences both as child artistes and as adult actors is Sujitha Dhanush. Interestingly, she faced the camera for the first time when she was just 41 days old and remains active in show business even after four decades. In her debut movie Abbas (Tamil), the newborn played the grandchild of legendary actor KR Vijaya. Malayalam actor-filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran, while promoting his latest release Aadujeevitham, recently spoke at length about his equation with Fahadh Faasil. A video clip of Fahadh was shared at a Galatta event where he is seen praising Prithviraj for his hard work. “I don’t know if many people know this. The first time Prithvi ever did a screen test or an audition was in my house, for my father. I was fortunate enough to witness the birth of a star. And I think that’s the bond I share with him, with you my brother. If there’s anyone who can be Najeeb, that’s you, my brother. I know the physical and mental trauma you went through. We met during the time. You made it look easy. You made it look like it is part of the job. I love you. It is because of you, it feels like my own. I am as excited as I would be for my film,” Fahadh said in the clip. Fahadh Faasil also taunted Blessy, the director of Aadujeevitham, asking when …

There’s a certain fragility in her ownership of power, the manner is which she is able to unlock the loneliness and hurt that has piled up over the course of her story.
