The aim of the relaxations was precisely to ease the flow of investments that had earlier been locked out of India. What was the earlier rule? The Indian government in April 2020 issued Press Note 3, in which it amended India’s FDI policy. The existing rule at the time said that any entity of Bangladesh and Pakistan could invest in India only after securing Government approval. Press Note 3 widened this stipulation to include any country that shared a land border with India. So, this included Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. The popular perception is that the government took this decision as a result of border …

Deepak Parekh Calls for Higher FDI in Banks, End to Priority Lending Norms

Deepak Parekh Calls for Higher FDI in Banks, End to Priority Lending Norms

The government should allow banks greater freedom to choose where to lend and remove the limits on foreign direct investment (FDI) in the sector, Deepak Parekh, former chairman of the erstwhile Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) said on Saturday. These changes, Parekh said, would help Indian banks grow in terms of asset size and make them attractive for foreign players — key for India’s economic growth. “I think it is time to allow banks greater freedom in choosing where they lend. Priority sector rules, as they stand today, belong to an era gone by. There is merit in completely opening up the foreign direct investment limits for private sector banks, and increasing FDI limits for public-sector banks from 29% currently to 49% at least,” Parekh said at the London Business School’s India Conclave held in Mumbai. “There are enough checks and balances through caps on voting rights and ownership limits. So, the RBI and the government should not be worried about opening up the sector,” Parekh further said, adding that this should be the next …

Indian Railways has attracted a total of USD 942 million in foreign direct investment (FDI) equity inflows over the past 11 years (2014-15 to 2025-26 up to December 2025), including under the automatic route, according to the Ministry of Railways. The FDI has supported major projects across the sector, with 100 per cent equity allowed under the automatic route for areas such as suburban corridor construction and operations through public-private partnerships (PPP), high-speed trains, dedicated freight corridors, rolling stock manufacturing and maintenance, railway electrification, signalling systems, freight and passenger terminals, industrial sidings, and mass rapid transport systems. The information was shared by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who oversees Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics and IT, in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. To strengthen technical capabilities, Indian Railways has signed MoUs with Switzerland, Germany, Russia, and Spain, focusing on high-speed rail development, freight and passenger operations (including multimodal transport), advanced IT solutions, and predictive maintenance of railway assets. A Balancing Act Amid Geopolitical Uncertainties: What Easing FDI Rules For China Means For India | India News

A Balancing Act Amid Geopolitical Uncertainties: What Easing FDI Rules For China Means For India | India News

Last Updated:March 11, 2026, 15:56 IST It reflects a more calibrated approach that attempts to balance security concerns with the need for investment, technology and supply chain integration. Allowing carefully screened Chinese investments in manufacturing could help India expand production capabilities more quickly. The Union Cabinet on Tuesday eased Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) rules for China and other countries sharing a land border with India, by amending Press Note 3 of 2020, according to an official release. India’s move to gradually ease restrictions on Chinese foreign direct investment (FDI) comes at a time of heightened global uncertainty and shifting geopolitical alignments. Nearly six years after New Delhi imposed strict scrutiny on investments from countries sharing a land border with India, the government is now signalling a more flexible approach — one shaped as much by economic realities as by global strategic changes. The original restrictions were introduced in 2020 following the deadly border clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh. At the time, India mandated that investments from neighbouring countries, particularly China, would …

Will 100% FDI amendment make insurance affordable in India?| Business News

Will 100% FDI amendment make insurance affordable in India?| Business News

For decades, India’s insurance challenge has been one of awareness, purchasing power parity and trust. A sustained focus on urban markets and standardised products led to low penetration, limited risk capacity and persistent protection gaps. This left numerous households uninsured. Image for representational purposes only. (Unsplash) The Sabka Bima Sabki Raksha (Amendment of Insurance Laws) Bill, 2025, allowing 100 percent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), marks a structural shift. Foreign participation was capped at 24 percent when privatisation reopened in the early 2000s to build domestic capability. Over the past 25 years, the limit rose from 26 percent in 2000 to 49 percent in 2015, 74 percent in 2021 and is now fully liberalised. The key question is: “Will this reform finally make insurance more affordable and accessible for consumers?” The answer lies in how higher capital, deeper risk capacity and stronger competition translate into outcomes across pricing, products, reach, underwriting and service quality. Higher capital and deeper reinsurance capacity With 100 percent FDI permitted, more insurers and reinsurers can establish or expand operations in India, …

Japan’s MUFG Bank to invest Rs 39,000 crore in Shriram Finance for 20% stake | Business News

In the single largest foreign direct investment (FDI) into an Indian financial services company, the board of Shriram Finance Ltd (SFL) has approved a proposal to raise Rs 39,618 crore ($4.4 billion) from Japan’s MUFG Bank Ltd through a preferential allotment of equity shares. This will give the Japanese lender a 20 per cent stake in SFL on a fully diluted basis. The transaction gives MUFG Bank, Japan’s largest bank, a strong foothold in the retail financial services in the country. Shriram Finance, which has a market capitalisation of Rs 1.69 lakh crore, reported a net profit of Rs 9,761 crore for FY25. This is the biggest investment by a Japanese bank in India after SMBC, part of the Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMFG), acquired a 20 per cent stake in Yes Bank for about Rs 13,483 crore (around $1.6 billion) in April 2024. The investment allows SMBC to raise its holding to 24.99 per cent without being classified as a promoter. With domestic growth constrained by prolonged low interest rates and an ageing population, …
