Karnataka HC temporarily halts felling of 371 trees at Bengaluru Cantonment railway compound | Legal News

The Karnataka High Court has temporarily halted the felling of 371 trees located on an 8.61-acre property at the Cantonment Railway Station colony in Bengaluru in the wake of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the move. “No trees standing on the subject land shall be cut or damaged,” the division bench of Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice C M Poonacha directed the railways and other authorities on Wednesday, while posting the case for February 13, 2026, and issuing notices over the plea. The interim order was issued following a PIL filed by former MLA A T Ramaswamy and others seeking the preservation of 371 trees at the Cantonment Railway Station colony, located opposite the railway station, after the state government issued a notification on December 6, withdrawing a previous notification of September 10, 2025, which declared the region to be a biodiversity site under Section 37 of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002. “The petitioner states that there are a large number of trees standing in the area, which is rich in biodiversity. NGT stays further felling of trees at a Ludhiana distributary | Chandigarh News

Hearing the matter on the alleged conversion of forest land for non-forest activities due to the modernisation of minor canal (distributary) from Fatehpur Awana to Ayali Khurd in Ludhiana district, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Thursday stayed further axing of trees “with immediate effect” until the next date of hearing. Petitioners Kapil Arora and Kuldeep Singh Khaira, members, Public Action Committee (PAC), submitted that the Regional Officer (RO) Chandigarh, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, had granted approval for change in land use for concreting the channel, permitting the felling of 391 well-grown trees. The petitioners approached the NGT seeking quashing of the order on the grounds that viable alternate methods of concreting — which would have saved over 350 trees — were never examined. Co-petitioners Jaskirat Singh and Amandeep Singh pointed out that the Supreme Court (SC), in matters concerning tree felling, has consistently held that all alternatives must be explored to minimise ecological loss, and that development and environmental protection must go hand-in-hand. During the hearing, after submissions from the Forest Department, …

MUMBAI: A day after chief minister Devendra Fadnavis defended the proposed axing of 1,700 trees in Nashik to build temporary accommodation for sadhus attending the Simhastha Kumbh in 2026-27, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar has thrown his weight behind citizens protesting the move. Pawar’s bold stand relates to the state’s decision to clear 300 acres in Tapovan, to build Sadhugram, a township to house thousands of seers, priests and religious leaders for the Kumbh Mela in October-November 2026. It also comes amid friction between the ruling allies in the BJP-led Mahayuti government, during elections to local bodies across the state. While differences between deputy chief minister and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde and Fadnavis have been surfacing periodically, this is the first time Pawar, who is also the NCP chief, has publicly spoken up against Fadnavis. Pawar’s remarks have forced …
