Velankanni Raj Cyclone Fengal that hit Tamil Nadu last month and left behind a trail of destruction in many northern districts, has claimed 40 lives, according to the address of Governor R.N. Ravi, which was tabled in the Assembly on Monday (January 6, 2025). The Governor urged the Union government to release a sum of ₹6,675 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund. Though the Governor left the Assembly hall a few minutes after he commenced his customary speech in the first session of this year, Speaker M. Appavu read out the Tamil version of the Governor’s speech prepared by the Tamil Nadu government. Centre Releases Rs 994 Crore To Tamil Nadu For Cyclone Fengal Relief Work

MK Stalin said Cyclone Fengal caused “unprecedented” devastation in the state. New Delhi: The Central government has approved the release of Rs 944.8 crore to the Tamil Nadu government as two installments of central share from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to help it provide relief to people affected by cyclone Fengal, the Home Ministry said in an official statement. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the government stands shoulder to shoulder with the states affected by natural calamities in mitigating the hardship faced by people, the statement said. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved the release of Rs 944.8 crore to the Tamil Nadu government as both the installments of central share from the SDRF to help the state in providing relief assistance to people affected by cyclone Fengal on November 30, it said. On the evening of December 1, 2024, a family of four and three of their neighbours huddled together under a metal roofed single-room house, in VOC Nagar, a residential area at the foot of the Arunachala hill in Tiruvannamalai district. They listened as torrential rains brought by Cyclone Fengal pounded the district in interior Tamil Nadu. S. Meenakshi, 27, who lives opposite the house, recalls the tragedy that occurred shortly after. Her sister, R. Meena, 26, and Meena’s husband, N. Rajkumar, 32, both brick kiln workers, had returned home the previous evening as their workplace, located 20 kilometres from the temple town, had flooded. Meenakshi says the couple had been working in the brick kiln for a few years and had often stayed there for weeks to complete tasks before returning to VOC Nagar. That Sunday was special for Rajkumar as he had come back to his children — 9-year-old Goutham and 7-year-old Iniya — after working tirelessly for a month at the kiln, she says. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed grief over the death of seven persons, including five children, killed in landslide caused by rain in Annamalaiyar Hill in Thiruvannamalai district and announced Rs 5 lakh solatium each to their kin on Tuesday. The seven persons, including a family of four in VOC Nagar on the foothills and three children from the neighbourhood were trapped in a house and got buried under mud and rocks, after a boulder rolled down from the hilltop following torrential rain on December 1, and hit the residential building. Their bodies were recovered on December 2 evening. The boulder had rolled down due to a mud slip on the hilltop owing to the heavy rain triggered by Cyclone Fengal and fell down, crushing the house. As a result, the house was completely buried under mud, Tiruvannamalai district Collector D Bhaskar Pandian had said. Seeking immediate relief for the devastation caused in Tamil Nadu by Cyclone Fengal, Dravida Muennetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader T.R. Baalu urged the Centre to send an assessment team to the State. Raising the matter in the Lok Sabha during the Zero Hour, Mr. Baalu said the fury of the cyclone had caused heavy damage in 14 districts of Tamil Nadu, including Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Tiruvannamalai, and Chengalpattu. He said 12 persons had lost their lives while 1.5 crore people had been severely affected. Elaborating on the extent of damage caused, the DMK leader said 9,576 kilometres of roads and 1,847 small bridges had been damaged. “About 2,416 huts have been washed away, 721 houses have been damaged, and about 963 cattle have died,” he said. The effect of Cyclone Fengal on Tuesday caused rains to hit numerous areas of Karnataka, especially the coastal, Malnad, and south interior regions, according to officials, PTI reported. Deputy Commissioners in districts such as Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Chamarajanagar, Udupi, Mysuru, and Chikkaballapur declared holidays for schools and colleges. Many areas of the coastal, Malnad (Western Ghats), and south interior cities experienced waterlogging and traffic congestion as a result of the rains in Bengaluru and other districts, PTI cited. As per PTI, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated in a statement that at 8.30 am Tuesday, the well-marked low-pressure area over coastal Karnataka and the adjacent east-central Arabian Sea was still in place. Puducherry`s Education Minister, A. Namachivayam, has said that government and private schools, as well as colleges will remain closed on Tuesday due to heavy rainfall caused by Cyclone Fengal. Meanwhile, Chief Minister N. Rangaswamy said on Monday that the Puducherry government has announced to provide relief assistance of Rs 5,000 each to all ration cardholders affected by Cyclone Fengal. “Due to cyclone Fengal, Puducherry received 48 per cent rainfall, which was unexpected. The Puducherry government has decided to provide relief assistance of Rs 5,000 to all ration cardholders affected by the cyclone,” Rangaswamy told reporters. “Additionally, due to heavy rainfall, 10,000 hectares of crops in the Puducherry state have been damaged. Cyclone Fengal, which wreaked havoc across 14 districts of Tamil Nadu, has left over 1.5 crore individuals and 69 lakh families grappling with extensive destruction, according to the state government. On Monday, Chief Minister M K Stalin wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking immediate relief of Rs 2,000 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund to address the disaster’s fallout. The cyclone, which began as a low-pressure system on November 23, intensified before landfall on December 1. It unleashed torrential rains and wind speed of 90 km/hour in districts such as Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, and Tiruvannamalai. Interior districts like Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Ranipet, Vellore and Tirupattur were also severely affected. “The cyclone has caused unprecedented devastation across 14 districts of Tamil Nadu,” Stalin said.
