Ian Nepomniachtchi names Praggnanandhaa among 2 favourites to win Candidates in his tier list | Chess News

Two-time world championship contender Ian Nepomniachtchi has named India’s R Praggnanandhaa as one of the two favourites to win the upcoming Candidates tournament in Cyprus. The winner of the Candidates will earn a shot to challenge world champion Gukesh later this year. “I would say there are two main favorites (at this year’s Candidates). They are Praggnanandhaa and Fabiano Caruana. It seems to me that Praggnanandhaa, who plays very well in general, he’s a very good player, he is quite versatile, he has a large choice of openings. That is, he is not an opening specialist, but he has lots of options what to play. I think he will have a good team,” Nepomniachtchi said in an interview on the Chess with Mustreader YouTube channel. Gukesh D becomes youngest world champion in history of chess, beats Ding Liren in final game – India TV

Image Source : PTI Gukesh becomes the chess world champion after beating Ding Liren. India’s Gukesh D has created history as he has become the youngest-ever world champion in the history of chess. The Indian star defeated defending champion Ding Liren in the final game to win the title. Gukesh has become the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand to become the world champion in chess. Playing with black in the 14th and final game of the Chess World Championship, Gukesh outclassed China’s Liren in a marathon game. The game was well-headed towards a tie, which would have taken this match into the tiebreaker but the Indian star clinched the title in 14 games itself. The match was heading towards a draw but the defending champion made a blunder at move 55 when he moved his rook to f2. Ding realised his mistake and had to eventually resign. Gukesh was in tears and couldn’t hold himself back as he became the youngest ever to be crowned the chess world champion. More to follow… Disclaimer: We do …

World Chess Championships: Magnus Carlsen says Gukesh no longer the favourite – ‘Pure 50-50 at this point’ | Chess News

World Champion Ding Liren and Gukesh played out their sixth consecutive draw in what turned out to be the most uninspiring game of their battle so far. Both players have 4.5 points each after nine games, with five more games remaining before tiebreaks, which will be played in rapid format. Five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen, who has been following the proceedings closely, believes that D Gukesh has now lost his edge and is no longer the favourite. “We have finally arrived at a point where Gukesh is not a favourite in this match anymore. We have a pure 50-50 match at this point,” Carlsen mentioned on a YouTube show called Take Take Take, an app he is promoting along with content creator Levy Rozman. Former world champions like Vladimir Kramnik and Magnus Carlsen have been critical of the gameplay during this World Championship in their YouTube recap videos. Most experts remain unimpressed. “If Gukesh had been more vigilant or more accurate, he could have put Ding under pressure here,” the 5-time world champion Carlsen said …

World Chess Championship: Ding Liren at peace, Gukesh hungry and Magnus Carlsen casts a shadow before battle between ‘Chinese dragon’ and ‘Indian tiger’ | Chess News

A few hours before world champion Ding Liren was to find himself face to face at two separate events with D Gukesh, the 18-year-old challenger for his crown at this year’s World Championship, the Chinese grandmaster attended a special event with Singapore’s young chess talents. When Ding reached there, he was taken aback. Many of the kids had brought along personalised letters for him in Chinese, some running into two pages. “The fans here gave me a lot of gifts, including hand-written letters,” said the Chinese GM with a smile. “In China too, many players recorded a video to cheer me up. They gave me some energy.” These were the kind of pick-me-ups the world champion needed. Ding has spent months since he became world champion in April last year grappling with issues off the board. He’s publicly spoken out about being depressed. He’s gone through a wretched run of form at events like the Chess Olympiad in Budapest, struggling to convert winning positions and clutching only at draws. Magnus Carlsen, the man whose crown …

Gukesh ropes in mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton for World Chess C’ship

In chess, nothing matters more than mastering the mind – and Indian chess’s blue-eyed boy, D Gukesh, has taken that to heart. As Gukesh prepares for the high-stake FIDE World Chess Championship against Ding Liren of China, he has roped in renowned South African mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton, reported Indian Express. The World Championship match will be held at Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore from November 25 to December 14. Gukesh qualified for the World Championship after winning the FIDE Candidates at The Great Hall in Toronto, Canada in April this year. In September, in a seminal moment for Indian chess, Gukesh, continuing his dazzling form, played a pivotal role in India’s Chess Olympiad victory in Budapest, Hungary. 18-year-old Gukesh’s 3000+ rating performance at the Olympiad was the highest. Gukesh was among the four Indians who won individual gold at the event. Upton is a familiar name in Indian sports. He worked with the 2011 World Cup winning Indian cricket team, and several other Indian Premier League teams subsequently. Upton’s most recent work in …
