Finance Ministry not involved in printing NEET-UG re-exam papers: Government

The government on Saturday dismissed media reports claiming that the Ministry of Finance’s secured printing press may be used to print question papers for the NEET-UG re-examination, calling the claims fake.  In a post on social media platform X, PIB Fact Check said reports circulating in sections of the media linking the Finance Ministry to printing of NEET-UG re-examination papers were incorrect. “Several sections of the media are claiming that the NEET-UG re-examination question paper may be printed in the secured printing press of the Ministry of Finance,” PIB Fact Check said. Labelling the claim as fake, the government clarified that the Finance Ministry is not involved in printing question papers for the NEET-UG re-examination. “Ministry of Finance is not printing the NEET-UG re-examination question papers,” the fact-check unit said. In addition, PIB Fact Check urged people to rely only on official sources for verified information and cautioned against sharing unverified claims. No proposal to monetise temple gold holdings approved: Govt

The government on Tuesday dismissed as `false, misleading and baseless` reports and social media claims suggesting that it was planning to introduce a gold monetisation scheme for temple trusts and religious institutions across the country.  The Ministry of Finance, in an official clarification, said certain media reports and social media posts were falsely claiming that the Centre was planning to issue gold bonds to temples in exchange for temple gold reserves or had approved a proposal for monetisation of temple gold holdings. “The speculation and rumours suggesting that the Government is planning to introduce a monetisation scheme for gold held by temple trusts or any religious institution across the country are completely false, misleading and without any basis,” the statement said. With just a fortnight left for the Budget presentation, it’s not just the fiscal math that Finance Ministry officials are busy with. They are also finalising the location for printing the Budget copies. While the Ministry of Finance shifted from North Block at Raisina Hill to the new complex, Kartavya Bhavan, in October last year, it has had to recalibrate plans and fall back on the old printing press facility at North Block amid “significant constraints” for installing it in the new building. Last Updated:March 19, 2025, 00:32 IST The ministry of finance told Parliament that since the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act (FEOA), 2018, came into force, the ED has initiated proceedings against 24 individuals, of whom 13 have been officially declared fugitive economic offenders by special courts The ministry said that the ED has attached assets worth Rs 34,149.11 crore from these defaulters. Of this, a substantial Rs 17,750.09 crore has already been confiscated and restituted to public sector banks. Centre Asks Employees To Avoid AI Tools Like ChatGPT, DeepSeek: Report

New Delhi: India’s finance ministry has asked its employees to avoid using AI tools including ChatGPT and DeepSeek for official purposes, citing risks posed to confidentiality of government documents and data, an internal department advisory showed. Countries like Australia and Italy have placed similar restrictions on the use of DeepSeek, citing data security risks. Reports of the advisory surfaced on social media on Tuesday, ahead of a scheduled visit to India by OpenAI chief Sam Altman on Wednesday, when he is also due to meet the IT minister. “It has been determined that AI tools and AI apps (such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek etc.) in the office computers and devices pose risks for confidentiality of (government) data and documents,” said the advisory by the Indian finance ministry dated Jan. 29. Representatives for India’s finance ministry, ChatGPT-parent OpenAI and DeepSeek did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Finance Ministry Notifies Unified Pension Scheme For Government Employees

New Delhi: The Finance Ministry on Saturday notified the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) which promises an assured pension of 50 per cent of the average basic pay drawn over the last 12 months prior to superannuation. The UPS would be applicable to Central Government employees who are covered under the National Pension System and who choose this option under the National Pension System, according to a gazette notification issued by the Finance Ministry. UPS or assured payout would not be available in case of removal or dismissal from service or resignation of the employee, as per the notification published on Saturday. As per the notification dated January 24, the rate of full assured payout will be 50 per cent of 12 monthly average basic pay, immediately prior to superannuation subject to a minimum qualifying service of 25 years against a market returns linked payout under the NPS. The notification will give the option to 23 lakh government employees to choose between UPS and NPS, which came into effect on January 1, 2004. In case of …

New Delhi: With the Union Budget 2025-26 slated for February 1, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has demanded a slew of measures from the Finance Ministry, urging that the focus should be on boosting consumption, upping the daily minimum wage, and raising the annual payout under the PM-KISAN scheme, among others. CII demanded that to boost consumption, especially at the lower income level, reducing excise duty on fuel is crucial, as fuel prices significantly drive inflation, forming a substantial portion of the overall household consumption basket. The central excise duty alone accounts for approximately 21 per cent of the retail price for petrol and 18 per cent for diesel. The industry body added that since May 2022, these duties have not been adjusted in line with the approximately 40 per cent decrease in global crude prices. Lowering excise duty on fuel would help reduce overall inflation and increase disposable incomes, it added. “Domestic consumption has been critical to India’s growth story, but inflationary pressures have somewhat eroded the purchasing power of consumers. The Union Finance Ministry has issued an advisory in this regard. The Ministry said, “This is to clarify that there are no restrictions for persons of the queer community to open a joint bank account and also to nominate a person in the queer relationship as a nominee to receive the balance in the account in the event of the account holder.” The advisory for Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community (LGBT community) from the ministry comes in view of the Supreme Court order dated October 17, 2023, in the case of Supriyo@Supriya Chakraborty and another vs Union of India (Writ Petition Civil No.1011/2022). …
