Theatre: Finding home in our own skin

Theatre: Finding home in our own skin

News of the attack on Iran arrived just before the last show of The Skindom at Sahyande Theatre, Attapadi (Kerala). There was fear, grief and uncertainty. Families of six members of the cast, who are in Norway, seemed even further away as flight bookings passing through West Asia would now be unusable. Tears were shed. Prayers were said for people, for the world caught in a war. A conscious decision was made to continue to offer presence and peace through touch as the last show of the Asian premiere of The Skindom unfolded. Every audience member is facilitated “to see” a unique play behind closed eyes or through specially-created semi-opaque glasses. (Camilla Wexels Riser) Six Norwegian “touchers,” (that’s what these theatre practitioners call themselves) with two invited collaborators (of which I was one), then dived into the immersive theatre production in which every audience member is facilitated to “see” a unique play behind closed eyes or through specially created, semi-opaque glasses. The almost blindfolded participants were led in one by one and offered a range …

Mammootty, Shaji Kailas broke down after finding TS Krishnan dead at 33

Mammootty, Shaji Kailas broke down after finding TS Krishnan dead at 33

Aside from the testosterone-fuelled heroes, explosive dialogues, and social themes, director Shaji Kailas’ movies are remembered to this day for gifting Malayalam cinema with some of its most iconic villains. From Ekalavyan’s Swami Amoorthananda (Narendra Prasad), Commissioner’s Mohan Thomas (Ratheesh), The King’s Jayakrishnan (Murali), Aaraam Thampuran’s Kulappully Appan (Narendra Prasad), and FIR’s Narendra Shetty (Rajeev), to Narasimham’s Manappally Pavithran (NF Varghese), Valyettan’s Patteri Sivaraman Nair (Sai Kumar), and The Tiger’s John Varghese (Siddique), the list is long. Interestingly, alongside every supervillain, Shaji Kailas and his writers often lined up a couple of “side villains,” almost as menacing as their bosses, rendering the antagonists’ sides nearly invincible. Among the actors who frequently portrayed such characters in the director’s movies was TS Krishnan. Who was TS Krishnan? Aside from his ominous glances and sinister body language on screen, Krishnan also gained popularity for his stylish looks. While Shaji’s films often featured several supporting characters, Krishnan managed to find his way into the director’s heart as well, prompting Shaji to go above and beyond to help him during …

Cover Story: Ananya Panday On Evolving Through Cinema, Embracing Change And Finding Her Own Voice

There is something delightfully unfiltered about Ananya Panday. In an industry that often mistakes polish for personality, Ananya’s online presence feels refreshingly light-footed, self-aware and unabashedly young. Whether she is posting sun-drenched holiday photographs, giggling through behind-the-scenes moments, obsessing over her dogs, Riot, Honey and Thumper or turning up in impossibly chic couture with a wink rather than a pose, she carries the breezy energy of someone genuinely enjoying the ride. Over the years, she has steadily moved beyond the “star kid” tag, carving a space that blends glamour with relatability. There is a touch of old-school Bollywood sparkle to her, also the social media fluency of her generation, playful captions, candid selfies and the occasional wonderfully chaotic moment included. What makes Ananya particularly endearing is that she never appears manufactured. She comes across like the popular girl at a party, who would still stop to chat about skincare, bad dates and comfort food…Excerpts from an easy-breezy interview… Do you feel the pressure to constantly prove yourself because of the nepotism debate? How has that …

Off Campus to Heated Rivalry, Finding Her Edge: Hollywood finds love in ice rinks with these sports romances

From SRH to RCB, Bhuvneshwar Kumar keeps finding new ways to take wickets at 36 | Cricket News

From SRH to RCB, Bhuvneshwar Kumar keeps finding new ways to take wickets at 36 | Cricket News

The 2016 IPL final at Chinnaswamy. Bhuvneshwar Kumar in orange, winning the trophy for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Nine years later, same ground, different jersey – this time Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s maiden title. Two franchises, two championships, and a career that refuses to follow the arc most fast bowlers trace. Swinging the ball was never something Bhuvneshwar had to learn. It came naturally. His inswingers and outswingers were a puzzle for batters even in the shortest format, where the white ball and its seam have rarely been kind to fast bowlers. Over 11 years, he evolved from a swinging new-ball bowler into a death bowling specialist – nailing yorkers in the final overs, winning two Purple Caps, becoming as complete a T20 bowler as you will find. The secret was length. To swing the ball, you pitch it up. But at SRH, Bhuvneshwar discovered that the fuller deliveries were not always his most fruitful. The real damage came from slightly behind – 6 to 8 metres – that corridor where batters do not know whether to drive …

Jammu: Mistaken intake of wild plant behind Rajouri man’s death, indicates preliminary finding

Accidental consumption of a wild plant that resembles edible fiddlehead fern varieties may have caused the death of an elderly man and the illness of seven others of the same family in Modha Draj village of Kotranka tehsil in Rajouri district on May 16, experts from Rajouri Government Medical College (GMC) said on Monday. The viscera and other forensic samples have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory, Jammu, as well as Chandigarh to determine the precise cause of death and confirm the presence of any toxic compounds or poisonous plant derivatives. According to the preliminary information gathered during the initial field assessment, the incident involved a localised cluster of family members who reportedly consumed a common meal during lunch on May 15. Several individuals developed acute gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea, which were subsequently followed by neurological manifestations suggestive of possible exposure to a harmful wild plant substance, said GMC principal Dr AS Bhatia. The clinical presentation and epidemiological pattern raised suspicion of accidental ingestion of a toxic botanical agent. …
