Kolkata shuts 13 hotels, issues notices to 50 over fire safety violations

The West Bengal government on Friday shut down 13 hotels in central Kolkata, asked 16 hotels to vacate, and issued show-cause notices to another 50 hotels across the city and 29 in various districts across the state for allegedly failing to meet fire safety norms, officials said. This comes three days after an early morning blaze in central Kolkata’s Shikha Inn Hotel killed nine people on Wednesday. More than 50 hotels across Kolkata have been served show-cause notices since Thursday,” said a senior officer of the state fire department. The hotels that have been shut down or issued show-cause notices are located on Mirza Ghalib Street, Marquis Street and SN Banerjee Road in central Kolkata. Uttar Pradesh Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna on Tuesday said strict action would be taken against those responsible for the Lucknow fire tragedy that claimed the lives of at least 15 people, asserting that the state government would not spare anyone found guilty, irrespective of their position. Speaking to ANI, Khanna expressed condolences to the families of the victims and said Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had already issued directions for an inquiry into the incident. At least 100 persons were on the dance floor of a nightclub in North Goa, Birch by Romeo Lane, when a fire broke out there. The commotion led many to a death trap, downstairs into its basement kitchen, where they got trapped with the staff, eyewitnesses said. At least 25 people are reported dead — 14 of them staff members, four tourists, and some locals.
