Drawn by reels, crowds flock to Lucknow fire site as police struggle to keep onlookers away

Even as investigators sifted through the charred remains of the Aliganj building where the fire claimed 15 lives on Monday, a different crowd gathered outside on Tuesday. They were not mourners, but curious onlookers drawn by viral videos, social media posts and Instagram reels. Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and Special Investigation Team (SIT) members are on site for an investigation in Lucknow. (HT) What should have been a solemn disaster site turned into a spectacle for hundreds who traveled from across the city to catch a glimpse of the gutted structure. While grief hung heavy over the neighborhood and most residents remained indoors, crowds continued to arrive throughout the day, forcing police to tighten security around the area. The lanes leading to the building were barricaded, restricting access as forensic experts and senior officials conducted their investigations. Police personnel were deployed at every entry point to prevent the public from approaching the structure. Despite repeated warnings, many attempted to bypass the barricades to capture photographs and videos. Officers were seen turning people away and using …

Holding the flock together: Mamata reaches out to rebels as TMC battles further fragmentation

Kolkata, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee has launched efforts to prevent further exodus from the party following the first split in its 28-year history, personally reaching out to rebel legislators even as senior leaders work to hold together the flock that appears increasingly restless after the post-poll rupture. Holding the flock together: Mamata reaches out to rebels as TMC battles further fragmentation Sources in the party said Banerjee has over the past two days spoken to several MLAs from Howrah, Murshidabad and North Dinajpur, many of whom were seen attending meetings of the Ritabrata Banerjee-led rebel camp after 58 legislators seized control of the TMC legislature party and installed the expelled MLA as the leader of the opposition. The calls come at a time when the TMC founder finds herself in the unfamiliar position of fighting to retain leaders she had once handpicked and politically nurtured. “She is speaking to legislators individually and asking them to attend a meeting at Kalighat on Friday. The effort is to keep communication channels open and explore the possibility of …

Thousands flock to Bethlehem to revive Christmas spirit after 2 years of war in Gaza | World News

Thousands of people flocked to Bethlehem’s Manger Square on Christmas Eve as families heralded a much-needed boost of holiday spirit. The giant Christmas tree that was absent during the Israel-Hamas war returned on Wednesday. The city where Christians believe Jesus was born had cancelled Christmas celebrations for the past two years. Manger Square instead had featured a nativity scene of baby Jesus surrounded by rubble and barbed wire in homage to the situation in Gaza. Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the top Catholic leader in the Holy Land, kicked off this year’s celebrations during the traditional procession from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, calling for “a Christmas full of light.” Arriving in Manger Square, Pizzaballa said he came bearing greetings from Gaza’s tiny Christian community, where he held a pre-Christmas Mass on Sunday. In the devastation, he saw a desire to rebuild. “We, all together, we decide to be the light, and the light of Bethlehem is the light of the world,” he told thousands of people, Christian and Muslim. Why hundreds flock to play with decades-old computers

Why hundreds flock to play with decades-old computers

“ That’s one of the things about our museum, it’s hands-on,” says VCF East showrunner Jeffrey Brace. “If you go to the Smithsonian, everything’s locked away. You can’t touch it.” Throughout the festival, I played Oregon Trail on an Apple IIe, operated a renovated Heathkit H-89, doodled using every paint application from the ‘90s, and tested almost every kind of mechanical keyboard vintage computers had to offer. Both the permanent museum and the exhibit halls for the festival were filled with computers dating back to the 1960s all the way to modern Macs — but the real highlight of the festival is meeting the makers, hobbyists, and educators who are there just to share their collection of vintage electronics and the various projects they’ve been working on to keep them alive. I spoke to a variety of people who were running their own GSM base stations, 3D-printing ink cartridges, updating old hardware with modern keyboards, or even just showing off their minidisc collection. Even after my fourth year attending, I’m still learning something new or playing …

National Games: Locals flock to Haldwani for swimming and football – heated pools, floodlit soccer, music, dance … ‘festive atmosphere’ | Sport-others News

The last time the stadium was packed to capacity was when the Great Khali, the WWE superstar, performed a few years ago, says a beaming Rashika Siddiqui, deputy director sports. Siddiqui, a senior official, is shuttling between the two busy venues in Golapar, the swimming complex and the cricket stadium that is hosting packed-to-the-rafters football matches. On Sunday night, home team Uttarakhand were trailing Bengal 0-2 in the dying minutes of the women’s game, but within the stadium so loud were the spectators that one had to shout to be heard. The football pitch is pristine green. Winter ryegrass brought in from Europe was planted three months ago when the cricket pitch made way for a full-sized football ground, Siddiqui said. The temporary switch from leather ball to football for the 38th National Games is a hit at Golapar’s Indira Gandhi Sports complex. Inaugurated in 2016, the arena, across the railway tracks and the Gola river on the outskirts of Haldwani, got a major makeover for the games. Story continues below this ad The C-shaped …
