Officials said census preparatory work has been suspended in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts, which are yet to recover from the floods in July, among the worst the State has witnessed. Most of the 82 people who died in the floods this year were from these two districts. “The self-enumeration, which began today (Sunday), marks an important step towards making Census 2027 more participatory and citizen-centric,” Biswajit Pegu, Director of Census Operations, told journalists. He urged the people of Assam to use the online facility and participate in the Census process. He further said that the facility on se.census.gov.in would remain active until August 16, ahead of the commencement of the house-listing operation and housing census on August 17. Two male rhinos, injured and rescued during floods, were translocated on Tuesday from the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) to Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, an official said. Five-year-old Chandra and Kanai (4), were rescued in August 2020 and August 2021, respectively, and they were undergoing treatment at the CWRC since then. The Park authorities followed the internationally accepted conservation translocation protocol in which after obtaining the requisite permissions from the Chief Wildlife Warden, Assam, under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, a site election committee was constituted to look for possible locations ideally suited for the pre-release enclosures. The rhinos have been moved to a prea release enclosure, where they will be habituated to living under wild conditions before their final release to roam freely in the park, the official said. The Indian Embassy in Nepal handed over the first consignment of emergency reef materials, which includes sleeping bags, blankets and tarpaulin sheets to authorities in flood-hit Nepal, according to an official statement, PTI reported. According to PTI, the Indian Embassy said in a press release that around 4.2 tonnes of aid supplies handed over on Monday were for the affected families of the recent flooding in Nepal. Days of persistent downpours at the end of last month triggered widespread floods and landslides, leaving over 240 people dead across the Himalayan nation. The consignment was transported from India to Nepalgunj. It was handed over by Second Secretary Narayan Singh on behalf of the Indian government to the Chief District Officer of Banke, Khagendra Prasad Rijal, according to the press release, as cited by PTI. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday conducted an aerial survey of flood-hit areas of the state where large swathes of land have been inundated following the release of water from a barrage along the border with Nepal.
