‘Poor Florian Wirtz’: Bayern chief Uli Hoeness slams Liverpool’s ‘catastrophic season’, accuses Mo Salah and others of keeping the ball instead of passing | Football News

Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness slammed Liverpool’s subpar season, saying that the English club wasn’t playing to the strengths of star signing Florian Wirtz. He also accused players like Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai not passing to the German player and are instead happy to just keep the ball. “They have spent 500 million euros and are playing a catastrophic season… In my opinion, that’s because you only have superstars. You only have chiefs and no workers. I always say: at Liverpool, they’ll soon have to play with five balls because the stars don’t want to give up a ball. Poor Florian Wirtz, he doesn’t get the ball at all because Salah and Szoboszlai and what they’re all called want to play with their own ball.” Wirtz hasn’t yet hit the ground running for the Reds after his record £116m move from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer. The German playmaker has yet to register a goal or assist in the Premier League for the defending champions and has been under immense scrutiny for his …

Florian Wirtz Returns To Help Unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen Chase History

Bayer Leverkusen’s chances in Wednesday’s Europa League final clash with Atalanta in Dublin have been boosted by the return of star midfielder Florian Wirtz to full fitness. A crucial component of their maiden Bundesliga title bid, Wirtz has had to settle for a bit part role in recent weeks as coach Xabi Alonso, with games like this in mind, wrapped the 21-year-old in cotton wool. With Wirtz forced to play through the pain of a muscle injury to his leg, Alonso has used the midfielder sparingly. Wirtz has not played a full 90 minutes since Leverkusen’s Europa League quarter-final win over West Ham on April 11, nine games ago, but has still made an impact. He came off the bench at half-time and scored a hat-trick as Leverkusen beat Werder Bremen 5-0 to secure the title in mid-April.  In his next two league games, Wirtz laid on equalisers deep in stoppage time against Borussia Dortmund and Stuttgart which kept their unbeaten run alive.    Even with a team firing on all cylinders amid a 51-game unbeaten …

Rapid-fire Florian Wirtz Speeds Germany To Victory Against France

Florian Wirtz grabbed his first international goal with a strike that will go down in the history books as his Germany side beat France 2-0 in an international friendly on Saturday. On the cusp of seven seconds 20-year-old starlet Wirtz stunned the crowd in Lyon to give Germany the lead, before Kai Havertz wrapped up the encounter just after half-time in an impressive display by the Euro 2024 hosts. Toni Kroos, playing his first international since 2021, received the ball from kick-off and chipped it forward to Leverkusen playmaker Wirtz. Wirtz ventured forward and as he was not closed down, he unleashed a fierce dipping drive that left Brice Samba glued to the spot as the ball flew under the crossbar with the clock ticking to just seven seconds. “I don’t think anyone understood or realised what was happening. We were all quite surprised, but there was obviously a lot of joy. You can’t start a match any better,” Wirtz said to German television channel ZDF. “But for it to work so well and lead …
