Britain banned imports of cattle, pigs and other animal products from Hungary and Slovakia to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease after a confirmed case in Hungary, the government said in a statement on Friday. As of March 8, travelers would not be able to bring meat, meat products, milk, dairy products, and animal by-products of pigs and ruminants from the two countries, the statement added. “We will not hesitate to add additional countries to the list if the disease spreads”, Farming Minister Daniel Zeichner said, adding that the country will continue to keep the situation under review and work closely with authorities. Foot-and-mouth disease poses no danger to humans but causes fever and mouth blisters in cloven-hoofed ruminants such as cattle, pigs, sheep and goats, and outbreaks often lead to trade restrictions. CCEA approves Kedarnath, Hemkund Sahib ropeway projects; Cabinet okays livestock disease prevention programme | India News

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved two ropeway projects to cut down travel time to the two pilgrimage sites of Kedarnath and Hemkund Sahib in Uttarakhand. The Union Cabinet also approved the revision of the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP) on Wednesday, to ensure saturation vaccination to prevent and control livestock diseases, step up surveillance, and upgrade healthcare facilities. Both ropeway projects approved on Wednesday will be implemented under the National Ropeways Development Programme – Parvatmala Pariyojana, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, said while briefing the media on the Cabinet decisions. Kedarnath is situated at an elevation of nearly 12,000 feet in Rudraprayag district while Hemkund Sahib is at an elevation of 15,000 feet in Chamoli district.
