SAG-AFTRA files complaint over Fortnite’s AI Darth Vader

SAG-AFTRA files complaint over Fortnite’s AI Darth Vader

SAG-AFTRA wrote in a statement that it understands its members and members’ estates wish to use AI technology in any way they choose. “However,” SAG-AFTRA’s statement continued, “we must protect our right to bargain terms and conditions around uses of voice that replace the work of our members, including those who previously did the work of matching Darth Vader’s iconic rhythm and tone in video games.” While the AI “revolution” slowly replaces human workers with oftentimes inferior products, and despite some members’ distaste for the practice, SAG-AFTRA has embraced the idea of using AI trained to replicate an actor’s performance. It has established contracts and partnerships with several AI companies with the idea being members can use this technology with specific contract-guaranteed protections. So the act of using an AI to replace Darth Vader’s voice performers (both the late James Earl Jones and those brought in after his death to match his performance) isn’t what SAG-AFTRA is objecting to. Rather, it’s the fact that this was done without Epic Games sitting down with SAG-AFTRA at …

Apple blocks Fortnite’s App Store return as downloads fail in Europe

Apple blocks Fortnite’s App Store return as downloads fail in Europe

Fortnite maker Epic Games has announced that Apple has blocked the game’s return to iOS. Following the rejection, Fortnite is no longer available on iPhones and iPads even in the European Union, where it had previously been available to download through the Epic Games Store. “Apple has blocked our Fortnite submission so we cannot release to the US App Store or to the Epic Games Store for iOS in the European Union,” the company posted on the official Fortnite X account. “Now, sadly, Fortnite on iOS will be offline worldwide until Apple unblocks it.” The Verge has confirmed that the game is no longer available to download on iOS from the Epic Games Store or the alternative marketplace AltStore PAL in the EU, where it had previously been available. It’s not yet clear if Apple blocked the game’s availability through those stores, or if Epic itself chose to make it unavailable. We’ve reached out to both Apple and Epic for comment. This week Epic CEO Tim Sweeney announced that the company had pulled its previous …

Fortnite’s Star Wars season will let you fly an X-Wing and use Force Lightning

Fortnite’s Star Wars season will let you fly an X-Wing and use Force Lightning

Fortnite’s new Star Wars-themed season will add new locations, weapons, skins, vehicles, and even new Force powers to the game when it kicks off on Friday, according to a blog post. The Fortnite island’s new Star Wars spots include a First Order base, a smuggler hub called the Outpost Enclave, a Resistance base with X-Wings, and a dedicated location where you can find Darth Vader Samurai (a real and very good skin in the game). The locations seem like they’ll be worth dropping at; you’ll be able to fly the X-Wings, for example, and defeating Darth Vader Samurai in battle will net you a red lightsaber and a Force power that lets you throw it. Speaking of Force powers, a hologram of Rey will also be on the island, and she can give you a Force push power. Find the hologram of Emperor Palpatine and you can get Force lightning. If you want to actually play as Sheev Palpatine, he’ll be one of the skins you can unlock in the season’s battle pass, which also …

Fortnite’s new season has heists, pickles, and Cowboy Bebop

Fortnite’s new season has heists, pickles, and Cowboy Bebop

Fortnite continues to be extremely weird in its new season. The battle royale game is returning to a heist theme for Chapter 6: Season 2, which has been dubbed “Lawless.” Players will be able to break into bank vaults, rob armored cars, and even perform robberies on the train that services the island. Also, there’s a giant pickle that raps. After a Japanese-inspired season, Lawless looks like it’s taking cues from games like Grand Theft Auto. In addition to all of the robbery, there are also a handful of new locations, including an urban locale simply called Crime City. Other new features include: gold water that gives you powers when you swim in it; a fictional crypto currency that you can buy gear with but resets after each match; black markets for buying high-end weapons; a scanner for detecting where enemies are; and a mob boss who apparently likes to show up in the middle of a heist. Also new is the ability to have a specific song playing when you drop onto the map …

Fortnite’s new mode is an FPS that’s a lot like Counter-Strike

Fortnite’s new mode is an FPS that’s a lot like Counter-Strike

Epic Games is about to let Fortnite creators publish experiences with first-person modes, and to help show what’s possible, Epic itself is introducing a tactical FPS shooter that seems like it will play a lot like Counter-Strike or Valorant. The new mode, called “Ballistic,” is “an adrenaline-filled, round-based 5v5 competitive game mode where strategy, tactical teamwork, and individual prowess are essential for victory,” according to an Epic blog post. Players will be split into two teams, with one that has to plant the bomb — sorry, I mean the “Rift Point Device” — and another that has to defend against that. Between rounds, you’ll be able to buy gear for the next one. Teams will switch sides after six rounds, and the first to win seven rounds will be crowned the victor. This isn’t the first time Epic has cribbed a game idea for Fortnite: its racing and festival modes both borrow a lot from Psyonix’s Rocket League and Harmonix’s Rock Band (Epic owns both studios), the Lego survival mode has a lot of similarities …

Fortnite’s latest concert turned pop stars into kaiju

Fortnite’s latest concert turned pop stars into kaiju

Fortnite’s most recent virtual concert was supersized in multiple ways. Unlike previous events, which focused on specific artists like Ariana Grande or Metallica, this one featured a cast of four different artists: Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Ice Spice, and the late Juice WRLD. And it turned each one of the large lineup into a kaiju-sized performer, while also integrating deep cuts of Fortnite lore and providing a tease of what’s next for the game. Things started out at Snoop Dogg’s compound, which has been at the center of the battle royale map since the beginning of November. From there, a gigantic version of the rapper performed, before whisking players away into space for another song. In fact, the event constantly moved around: up next was Eminem who fought against a giant robot following a dramatic storm, followed by Ice Spice towering over a cityscape like Godzilla. It ended back on the battle royale island with a pair of Juice WRLD songs. After things wrapped up, the game was used to premiere Juice WRLD’s new animated music …

Fortnite’s new TMNT roguelike shows the potential for user-made games

Fortnite’s new TMNT roguelike shows the potential for user-made games

Fortnite’s next big partnership with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is here. Epic Games already lets players dress up as the Turtles, and now, creators can publish experiences built with TMNT assets and the Unreal Editor for Fortnite. As a demonstration of what’s possible, Paramount teamed up with Spiral House (which has made other Fortnite experiences), to make a TMNT-themed beat-em-up / roguelike, TMNT Dimensions [Rougelike], that you can play inside Fortnite right now. (You can find it by searching for code 8651-4809-2485.) A lot of user-made Fortnite experiences look somewhat amateur, but this seems like a game you might actually want to play outside of Fortnite, especially if you’re already a fan of TMNT’s other arcade-y brawlers. Fortnite’s new post-apocalyptic season has Fallout, Magneto, and vehicular mayhem

Out with the gods, in with… a post-apocalypse. After some teasing, Fortnite just launched its latest battle royale season — we’re up to Chapter 5: Season 3 — and it’s heavily inspired by Mad Max and Fallout (in fact, Fallout is part of it). It’s called “Wrecked,” and it introduces a new wasteland region, a larger focus on vehicular combat, and, for some reason, Magneto. First up, let’s talk about the island itself. In the game’s fiction, a massive sandstorm rolled in, completely changing the southern section of the map. There are three new locations: a refinery called Redline Rig, a vehicle arena called Nitrodrome, and a beach area called Brutal Beachhead. To go along with them are “Wasteland Warriors,” which are basically this season’s boss characters, with names like The Machinist and Ringmaster Scarr. Also: there are now two War Buses patrolling the island, which players can hijack and take over. It appears there are two main gameplay updates. One is a substance called Nitro, which you can either drink or use on your …

Fortnite’s next major in-person tournament will be in Copenhagen

It’s not quite a return to the World Cup from 2019, but Fortnite is getting a major in-person tournament this year. Today, Epic Games announced the FNCS Global Championship 2023, which will take place in Copenhagen toward the end of the year. A specific location hasn’t been announced yet, but Epic says that the tournament will feature 75 different duos teams and have a prize pool totaling $4 million. The announcement is the highlight of a larger plan for competitive Fortnite in 2023, which includes the return of the online Fortnite Champion Series, or FNCS, tournament structure. This year, there will be three “major” tournaments throughout the year, each of which will last five weeks, with the first starting on February 2nd. Duos will compete in matches over the first three weeks, earning points for placement, and each major will culminate in a grand final with the top 40 teams qualifying for a chance at their share of a $2 million prize pool (and qualification for the global championship at the end of the year). …
