Kerala Assembly polls 2026: Bitter battle for nine seats that can turn electoral fortunes

One wall, three rivals: NDA, LDF and UDF candidates Padmaja Venugopal, Alankode Leelakrishnan and Rajan J. Pallan share campaign space in Thrissur, Kerala | Photo Credit: Najeeb K.K. Major three-cornered contests are happening in at least nine constituencies in Kerala that could even determine the final outcome of the upcoming Assembly election scheduled for April 9. Of these constituencies, Nemom, Kazhakkoottam, Vattiyoorkkavu, and Aranmula are in the southern part of the State; Pala, Thrissur, and Nattika are in Central Kerala; and Palakkad and Manjeshwaram are in North Kerala. While six of these have MLAs from the Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by Communist Party of India (Marxist), the rest are represented by the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). Nemom in Thiruvananthapuram district is so far the only constituency in Kerala to have elected a member from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to the Assembly. Senior BJP leader O. Rajagopal had defeated K. Sivankutty of the LDF in 2016. Mr. Sivankutty wrested the seat back in the 2021 polls as he defeated …

Cricket team calls ‘faither healer’ to banish evil spirits to change fortunes

Cricket team calls ‘faither healer’ to banish evil spirits to change fortunes

2 min readUpdated: Mar 21, 2026 03:31 PM IST In one of the bizarre incidents, Kent cricket has appointed a faith healer to get a competitive edge over other teams in the County Cricket. The rituals were performed during the English winter by the Head Coach of the County team, Adam Hollioake. “We got a faith healer in over the winter, or a spirit healer. I’m not sure what the exact title was, but we got someone to ward off the evil spirits,” Hollioake told The Cricketer. Kent finished bottom in Division Two of the County cricket last year, and it was Hollioake’s first season in charge. The team suffered through a major injury crisis last season. The effort to bring in the “spirit healer” was done to change the fortunes of the club for the upcoming season. The club has confirmed the same and said they have brought in a “non-denominational geopathic surveyor.” “Kent Cricket can confirm that a non-denominational geopathic surveyor visited the St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury during the winter. This visit …

Bangladesh out, Scotland in: As ICC draws a hard line, how walkovers in cricket changed a team’s fortunes

Bangladesh out, Scotland in: As ICC draws a hard line, how walkovers in cricket changed a team’s fortunes

Bangladesh being removed from the T20 World Cup 2026 is the ICC choosing certainty over negotiation – a reminder that global tournaments don’t run on sentiment, they run on compliance. Bangladesh are not the first team that is not playing a tournament after being named for it. (AFP) Cricket has been here before in different shapes: teams refusing to travel, boards pulling out, and administrators awarding points of reshaping groups to keep the event alive. The details change, but the ICC instinct doesn’t. When World Cup turned into walkovers The cleanest refusal to tour precedent sits in the 1996 ODI World Cup. Australia and West Indies did not travel to Sri Lanka on security grounds. The tournament didn’t bend the route map to rescue a fixture. Instead, Sri Lanka were awarded walkovers. That decision mattered beyond a couple of empty matchdays. A walkover isn’t neutral. It changes arithmetic without cricket being played, warps the urgency of later matches, and quietly hands on side momentum – the kind that becomes priceless in a short league phase. …

India Open badminton: MR Arjun seeks a turnaround in fortunes, with a younger, fiery partner in Hariharan beating fancied Malaysians | Badminton News

India Open badminton: MR Arjun seeks a turnaround in fortunes, with a younger, fiery partner in Hariharan beating fancied Malaysians | Badminton News

At 14-14 in the second game, Malaysia’s Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ei Yi were starting to take control against India’s MR Arjiun and Hariharan Amsakarunan. It would have triggered flashbacks for Arjun, especially. The 28-year-old, during his stint with Dhruv Kapila, came up against Ong-Teo five times and never won. Arjun and Hariharan had won the first game here, but the tide was starting to turn. What followed was a breathtaking rally of men’s doubles badminton, a rare lengthy exchange with all four players at each other… before Hariharan hit a smash that landed on the top of the tape and rolled over dead on the other side. The Indians, ranked 62, went on to win the match against the former top 10 duo, 21-15, 21-18 in 36 minutes. The luck factor wasn’t lost on Arjun. “I was telling Hari when we were knocking before the match, when I got like 2-3 lucky net cords, I think today’s a lucky day for us, and eventually that happened on court, and at a crucial stage …

Box Office: Sunny Deol’s Jaat sees mixed fortunes with strong India run, slow overseas response

Box Office: Sunny Deol’s Jaat sees mixed fortunes with strong India run, slow overseas response

No matter how loud the action, some stories hit harder at home than abroad. Bollywood’s senior star Sunny Deol‘s latest outing Jaat, which roared into cinemas on April 10, has been making decent noise in Indian theatres but has found the going tough in international markets. Directed by Telugu filmmaker Gopichand Malineni, Jaat marked Deol’s return to an intense action avatar. Backed by Mythri Movie Makers and People Media Factory, the film opened to a respectable Rs 9.25 crore on Day 1 in India. Despite being a weekday release, the numbers have held steady, with the film collecting Rs 5.75 crore on its sixth day. As of now, Jaat has amassed Rs 52 crore gross in India, showing that Deol still commands a solid fan base among the mass circuits.   However, the North American box office has painted a different picture. Riding on the massive legacy of Gadar 2, the film was acquired at a high Minimum Guarantee (MG) expecting similar returns. But current projections suggest Jaat might recover only 15% of what Gadar …

Punjab Kings Shatter All-Time IPL Record, Skipper Shreyas Iyer’s Fortunes Turn

Punjab Kings Shatter All-Time IPL Record, Skipper Shreyas Iyer’s Fortunes Turn

The best thing about time is that it changes. This phrase, often used by people to comfort their close and loved ones during times of distress, surely holds true for Punjab Kings (PBKS) and their captain Shreyas Iyer. From Kolkata to Mullanpur, PBKS, yet to lay hands on an Indian Premier League (IPL) title, provided fans with unpredictability, entertainment and an opportunity to be a part of two big milestones of league’s history. Last year at Eden Garden’s, in Kolkata, when Iyer was captaining KKR, his men were taken down brutally by a Jonny Bairstow-powered PBKS during a successful run-chase of 262 runs, the highest-ever run-chase in T20 cricket history. Now almost a year forward, Iyer stands at Mullanpur Stadium in Punjab with his coach Ricky Ponting, as a proud captain of a fighting, “never-say-die” PBKS unit, which defended 111 runs, the lowest-ever total in IPL history, showcasing a remarkable reversal of fortunes. For PBKS, both these victories came when they looked down and out, but forces of time made sure they got …

Manchester City sign Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt in bid to revive fortunes | Football News

Manchester City sign Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt in bid to revive fortunes | Football News

Defending English Premier League (EPL) champions Manchester City on Thursday announced the signing of Egypt forward Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt for 70 million euros ($73 million). The player is City’s third signing in the January transfer window after they snapped up defenders Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens and Vitor Reis from Palmeiras for a combined $77 million. Marmoush was the second-highest goal-scorer in the German Bundesliga this season with 15 strikes from 17 matches, second only to Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane. Frankfurt had signed Marmoush on a free transfer in 2023 from Wolfsburg, where he only scored five goals the season before. He can play in wide roles and has generally done so for Egypt’s national team, but less successfully than in a central role. He has six goals and three assists in 35 games for his country. However, it’s not clear where he would fit in the City starting XI with manager Pep Guardiola preferring to use just a single forward which Erling Haaland has already nailed on. We’re delighted to announce the signing …

Box Office: Can Kiara Advani CHANGE fortunes with War 2 after Game Changer debacle?

Box Office: Can Kiara Advani CHANGE fortunes with War 2 after Game Changer debacle?

Kiara Advani’s latest Pan-India movie, Game Changer, co-starring Ram Charan, couldn’t impress the audience much and tanked at the box office. Here’s putting some light on the box office potential of Kiara Advani’s upcoming release, War 2.  After the debacle of Shankar-directed Game Changer, Kiara Advani will next be seen in War 2, which stars two mega forces: Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR in the lead roles. Kiara plays a romantic hook for Hrithik Roshan’s character, R&AW agent Kabir. It is yet to be known whether Kiara’s character also comes from the intelligence agency.  War 2 is among the most hyped movies of 2025. It is slated to hit the big screen on August 14, cashing in on the Independence Day weekend. The spy action movie is expected to take a thunderous opening and rip off all the existing box office records. The fate of War 2 will definitely bring Kiara Advani back into the game after the disastrous performance of Game Changer.  However, Kiara will be seen in much less screen time than the two …
