Elden Ring Nightreign’s Procedurally Generated Map Will See ‘Large-Scale Changes to Terrain’

Elden Ring Nightreign was revealed at The Game Awards 2024 and is set to come out in 2025. The standalone multiplayer co-op action survival title will drop players into Limveld, where they’ll face challenges and bosses over a three day-and-night cycle. Now, developer FromSoftware has shared some details about the game’s procedurally generated world that’ll bring varying obstacles on every run. Elden Ring Nightreign will feature sweeping changes to the map, with volcanos, forests — and yes — swamps appearing across different runs. Elden Ring Nightreign Map Changes Game director Junya Ishizaki spoke to PC Game in magazine issue 504 (via GamesRadar) and shed more light on FromSoftware’s approach to the procedurally generated environments of Elden Ring Nightreign. According to him, the game’s map will sometimes feature “large-scale changes to terrain in the form of procedurally appearing volcanos or swamps or forests.” “We wanted the map itself to be a giant dungeon, so players have the chance to traverse and explore a different way every time they play,” he said. “You have to choose the boss …

Sony Confirms ‘Initial Declaration of Intent’ to Acquire FromSoftware Parent Kadokawa

Sony has confirmed its approach to acquire FromSoftware parent Kadokawa, weeks after a report claimed the company was in talks to buy the media and publishing firm. The PlayStation parent said it had made an “initial declaration of intent” to acquire Kadokawa. While the two Japanese companies had initially refused to comment on the report in November that claimed Sony had initiated acquisition talks, Kadokawa had later confirmed Sony’s approach. Sony Confirms Interest in FromSoftware Parent The confirmation from the technology giant came in comments made in a Yahoo Japan interview Wednesday. “It is true that we have made an initial declaration of intent, and we would appreciate it if we could refrain from commenting further,” Sony said (translated from Japanese). Kadokawa, a media conglomerate that owns Elden Ring developer FromSoftware, confirmed Sony’s interest last month following the initial report. “There are some articles on the acquisition of KADOKAWA Corporation (hereinafter “the Company”) by Sony Group Inc. However, this information is not announced by the Company,” Kadokawa had said in release on November 20. “The …

Elden Ring Has Sold Over 23 Million Copies, Bandai Namco Confirms

Elden Ring, the acclaimed fantasy RPG from FromSoftware, has sold over 23 million copies since its release in 2022, Bandai Namco has confirmed. The publisher revealed the sales figure in wake of the gameplay trailer and release date reveal of the game’s first major expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, on Wednesday. Exactly a year ago, Bandai Namco had announced that Elden Ring had sold 20 million copies worldwide. According to Bandai Namco, Elden Ring’s total sales figure comprises both the physical version and the downloadable digital release across all platforms, including Steam on PC. The RPG is developer FromSoftware’s highest selling title comfortably, beating Dark Souls 3 (released in 2016), which sold over 10 million units (as confirmed by the studio in 2020). In fact, Elden Ring is inching closer to the total sales number for the Dark Souls series, which has shipped over 27 million copies. The 23 million sales figure is likely to grow this year with the launch of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, the first major story expansion for the …

Elden Ring Deserved Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2022. Here’s Why

Elden Ring — FromSoftware’s epic fantasy role-playing game — was crowned Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2022 earlier today, warding off serious competition from Santa Monica Studio’s action-adventure extravaganza God of War Ragnarök. There were some eye-catching titles like Horizon Forbidden West, A Plague Tale: Requiem, Stray, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 in the fray for gaming’s top honour this year, but really, it came down to the PlayStation exclusive and, well, Elden Ring. To my delight, the latter won, and deservedly so. The two games, both incredible in their own right, represent the best that modern video games have to offer. But only one of them truly embodies the essence of the medium. There was a hot minute, where it did feel like God of War Ragnarök — the most nominated title at The Game Awards 2022 — would sweep the awards. Before the proceedings winded down to the main course, Ragnarök had already triumphed in six categories, including Best Narrative and Best Performance. And as is the case with all awards …
