The first round of negotiations for the proposed India-Israel Free Trade Agreement (FTA) has begin in Delhi and will continue until February 26 as PM Modi is scheduled to visit Tel Aviv on Wednesday. As per the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the ongoing negotiations, will also be meeting Israeli counterparts on February 25-26. The ministry said that the timing of the talks provides fresh momentum to deepen economic ties between the two countries, reported IANS.  The Terms of Reference (ToR) for the agreement were signed in November 2025, creating a structured framework for discussions aimed at expanding trade and economic cooperation. India`s recently concluded Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Union is expected to deliver significant gains for several Indian sectors, including textiles, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, agriculture, leather, and marine products, as the EU remains one of India`s largest and most important trading partners. The India-EU FTA, finalised in January 2026 after long negotiations, eliminates tariffs on over 90 per cent of goods traded between the two sides. According to a sectoral analysis by credit rating agency ICRA, the agreement grants India preferential zero-duty access on 97 per cent of EU tariff lines, covering nearly 99.5 per cent of the value of Indian exports, while India will cut or eliminate tariffs on 92 per cent of its tariff lines for EU imports. The textile and apparel sector is expected to be among the biggest beneficiaries. ICRA noted that duty-free access to the EU market will place Indian exporters on par with competitors such as Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Turkey, which previously enjoyed tariff advantages. It is worth noting that the accord was reached after two decades of torturous negotiations. Many observers of EU-India relations within the EU, in fact, had, for all practical purposes, abandoned hope that such an agreement would ever come to fruition. What explains this sudden breakthrough, which was celebrated with considerable fanfare right after Republic Day? Was European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s statement that this was beyond “the mother of all deals” mere hyperbole?
