Why Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 15 off 21 was a problem for CSK against SRH

4 min readMay 18, 2026 09:55 PM IST Off the 21st delivery he faced, Ruturaj Gaikwad finally took the aerial route off Pat Cummins. As Eshan Malinga pouched it deep square-leg, and Gaikwad dragged himself off, it felt as if the packed house at Chepauk was more relieved than stunned into silence. 15 off 21. No boundary or a six to show. A strike-rate of 71.42. Opening the batting and returning to the pavilion after 11.3 overs, the numbers said it all. In a tournament where openers and the top three have been setting the early pace with quickfire knocks, Gaikwad has been the opposite. His strike-rate of 120.67 is way below what modern T20 template demands. Chennai Super Kings’ opponent on the night, Sunrisers Hyderabad, have at their disposal two openers who strike at 209.13 and 171.09. As the broadcaster put out a graphic, Gaikwad’s strike-rate of 125 is the lowest among all openers who have faced a minimum of 200 deliveries this season. Sanju Samson opens up on CSK captaincy, Ruturaj Gaikwad bond

4 min readMay 10, 2026 11:21 AM IST Sanju Samson has been the toast of the T20 cricket season in India this summer. After leading the national side to a sensational T20 World Cup triumph in March, Samson’s switch to the Chennai Super Kings had made headlines ahead of the IPL 2026 season. The former Rajasthan Royals skipper was involved in one of the biggest trade deals in IPL history, moving to CSK at a sum of Rs 18 crore. While Samson was a proven captain at the Royals, the Kerala batter moved to the five-time champions without staking claim for a leadership role in a side currently helmed by Ruturaj Gaikwad, who took over from the legendary MS Dhoni. Speaking in a recent Super Kings podcast, Samson opened up on why he did not demand captaincy while making the switch. “No. I already had a team. I already had a place. I wanted to come out of there and join another team. So in that transaction, you can’t actually have demands. Honestly, you are …

The Rajasthan cricketer, who was bought by Chennai Super Kings for Rs 14.2 crore in last year’s IPL auction, making him the joint-most expensive uncapped player, was involved in an unbroken 114-run third wicket partnership with Sanju Samson. Sharma had scored 58 runs in his first five matches for CSK this season before he hit his maiden fifty. Following the win over Delhi, CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was asked about the development of Kartik Sharma. The Chennai skipper shared how the skillset was always there in Sharma and how the youngster needed some time in the middle. “Well, I think the skillset was already there. I feel there is no development as such. But the skillset he is showing in the last …

4 min readMay 6, 2026 01:44 PM IST With their eight-wicket win over Delhi Capitals in Delhi on Tuesday night, Chennai Super Kings scored their fifth win of this IPL season and now sit at the sixth spot in the points table with ten points. The Ruturaj Gaekwad-led team had started this year’s IPL with three losses in their first three matches before winning the next two matches. With four matches left for the team in the league stage, Chennai would hope to win a minimum of three out of those four to have a chance to make it to the play-offs. When asked about everything seeming to be coming together for his team, CSK captain Gaikwad shared how the team had the belief right from the start and needed those couple of wins to get the momentum. “I think even initially after the second and third game, the talk was about you know even Fleming and myself were always positive. Ruturaj Gaikwad’s unbeaten 67 and Kartik Sharma’s maiden fifty did the bulk of the work, chasing down 160 with 11 balls to spare. For Mumbai, another evening of squandered opportunity — 159 all but sealed their fate in a season that has consistently promised more than it has delivered. It was a night where Mumbai had themselves to blame. Winning the toss on a dry Chepauk surface, they lost Will Jacks in the second over without scoring. Ryan Rickelton and Naman Dhir steadied things, threatening a total in excess of 180. In the powerplay, Rickelton hit five sixes — three of them off a single Prashant Veer over — but strip those away and he made only seven off his remaining 19 deliveries. The platform was being laid, not built upon. CSK stayed patient, chasing wickets, fully aware that Mumbai’s brittle middle order could combust …
