Mounting garbage across residential colonies in the state capital has turned several areas into open dumping zones. From Vibhuti Khand to Alambagh, residents have reported that sanitation services have either slowed down drastically or stopped altogether over the past few days. In Samar Vihar Colony in Alambagh, residents alleged that garbage collection vehicles have not visited the locality for three to four days. With no alternative disposal mechanism, households have been forced to store waste inside their houses, raising serious hygiene concerns. PUNE Swachh employees have alleged that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) did not provide plastic buckets for them to collect the garbage and as a result, they were forced to collect garbage in bags made of cloth or plastic for the past two years. The employees claimed that many a time leakage from this garbage spilled on their clothes, soiling them. Swachh employees allege PMC did not provide plastic buckets to collect garbage and they are forced to collect waste in bags made of cloth or plastic since past two years. (HT) According to these Swachh employees, while the PMC collects garbage from the citizens’ doorsteps with their help, it does not provide them with safety gear for which they previously staged agitations in front of the PMC headquarters. Door-to-door waste collection work in the state capital has stopped in many parts with almost all the employees of zone II on strike. The work of waste collection is also partially affected in zone V and VIII. Employees of Eco Green, the waste collection company, said that they were on strike as their dues were not being cleared for the last few months. Leader of opposition in LMC house Sayyed Yawar Hussain Reshu said: “The situation of waste collection in the city has become very bad. Nonpayment of dues has become a permanent feature now. But why should the residents suffer due to this because they pay their service charges every month?” Nagar Swasthya Adhikari S K Rawat said: “LMC has directed the local officials to clear the dues of employees on time.
