Legendary West Indies cricketer Garry Sobers passes away at 89

1 min readUpdated: Jul 17, 2026 09:08 PM IST Former West Indies cricketer Sir Garfield Sobers passed away on Friday at the age of 89 at home in Barbados. Sobers is widely regarded as cricket’s greatest all-rounder. “A great innings has come to an end. In our hearts, now and forever, Sir Garfield Sobers,” Cricket West Indies said in a post on X. A left-handed batsman who could bowl in the vastly different styles of fast-medium, orthodox spin and wrist spin, as well as a brilliant fielder, Barbados-born Sobers represented the West Indies in 93 Tests from 1954 to 1974. Without much debate, Sobers is considered the greatest all-rounder that the sport has seen. He scored over 8,000 Test runs and picked up 235 wickets on the international arena, and overall, more than 28,000 runs and a staggering 1043 wickets. “The greatest all-round cricketer the world has seen”. He wrote: “Sobers was a brilliant batsman, splendid fielder, particularly close to the wicket, and a bowler of extraordinary skill, whether bowling with the new ball, providing orthodox …

Garry Kasparov: If Javokhir Sindarov beats Gukesh, there’s a chance Magnus Carlsen might come back to World Championship cycle | Chess News

3 min readApr 17, 2026 12:48 AM IST Former world champion Garry Kasparov has said that on current form Javokhir Sindarov looks “more impressive” than India’s D Gukesh ahead of their upcoming World Chess Championship match at the end of the year. Kasparov also said that should Sindarov manage to defeat Gukesh at the world championship, Magnus Carlsen might be tempted to make a return. Sindarov won the Candidates tournament in Cyprus without losing a single game and had taken a healthy lead by the time half the tournament had ended. “The way he won the Candidates, it was very impressive. I must say, it’s hard to impress me. But the way Sindarov played — his timing, the quality of his moves, his ability to withstand pressure and increase the pressure on his opponents — was exceptional,” Kasparov said in an interview with St Louis Chess Club’s YouTube handle. “Compared to Gukesh, if you look at the games, Sindarov looks like the clear favorite. But this match is a special format. Gukesh is very mentally …

Garry Kasparov: Pragg looks like bleak shadow of himself; Would love to see Sindarov vs Magnus Carlsen World Championship match | Chess News

3 min readApr 11, 2026 09:00 AM IST Chess legend Garry Kasparov has said that Indian prodigy R Praggnanandhaa has of late looked like a “bleak shadow” of the Pragg we have seen over the last few years. After 10 rounds of the Candidates tournament in Cyprus, Praggnanandhaa finds himself in seventh spot, with exactly half the number of points than tournament leader Javokhir Sindarov, who is a peer of the Indian youngster. “Pragg was on the rise and just now it’s like he’s a bleak shadow of what we saw a couple of years ago,” Kasparov said with a hint of surprise in his voice in a conversation with the St Louis Chess Club during the 10th round when Praggnanandhaa was facing off against Sindarov. Pragg went on to lose that game, which was his second defeat to the Uzbek prodigy in the tournament in two games, in a result that effectively ended his chances of winning the tournament. When grandmaster Yasser Seirawan mentioned that Pragg’s play at the Candidates had looked “stale” and …

Rajesh Khanna led his wedding baraat past ex-girlfriend Anju Mahendru’s house; made her break engagement with cricketer Garry Sobers | Bollywood News

Rajesh Khanna, fondly known as Kaka, was one of the most popular stars of his era and many from his generation often describe him as the first superstar who had the fans wrapped around his little finger. But much before he got his stardom, Rajesh was known as Jatin, and was in love with another aspiring actor Anju Mahendru. Rajesh and Anju first met when they were working together in theatre and before they knew it, they developed a romantic relationship. Like many volatile relationships, theirs went through its ups and downs but its abrupt end came when Rajesh decided to marry Dimple Kapadia, who was half his age. To rub salt into Anju’s wounds, Rajesh made sure that his wedding baraat crossed Anju’s house, as if he wanted to show her that he had successfully moved on. But things were not as simple as they seemed as Anju was asked to abandon her career to take care of Kaka. He, on the other hand, started his relationship with Dimple, whilst he was still going …

“D Gukesh World Champion But Magnus Carlsen Considered Better”: Chess Great Garry Kasparov

“D Gukesh World Champion But Magnus Carlsen Considered Better”: Chess Great Garry Kasparov

Russian chess icon Garry Kasparov, whose record of being the youngest world champion was bettered by D Gukesh, feels that the Indian is in a “different situation” compared to him as Norwegian Magnus Carlsen is considered, “by all metrics”, a better player than the Chennai teenager. Gukesh was 17 when he defeated China’s reigning world champion Ding Liren in a 14-game showdown to claim the coveted title last year. Kasparov was 22 when he clinched the world crown back in 1985, beating compatriot Anatoly Karpov. “It’s a phenomenal accomplishment (Gukesh’ world championship win). But I beat the strongest player in the world. Gukesh is in a different situation because Magnus is there. “So yeah Gukesh is official world champion, there is no doubt about it, but there is somebody else who is widely considered, by all metrics, as a better player,” Kasparov told the YouTube channel of Saint Louis Chess Club during the Superbet Chess Classic in Bucharest, Romania. This is not the first time that a comparison has been made between Gukesh …

Babar Azam Backed To Be In Same League As ‘Viv Richards, Garry Sobers’ And ‘Bigger Than Virat Kohli’

It has been a tough couple of years for Pakistan cricket team batter Babar Azam. Babar, who was once rated as one of the top batters in the world, has been struggling to score runs in all three formats and his poor show in ICC competitions has resulted in massive criticism from both fans as well as experts. The star batter was even dropped from the Pakistan side following their dismal Champions Trophy campaign. However, Pakistan Super League (PSL) side Karachi Kings owner Salman Iqbal has backed Babar to bounce back and become a bigger cricketer than Virat Kohli. Iqbal went on to say that Babar may ended up matching legends like Sir Viv Richards and Sir Garfield Sobers. “I am telling you. Mark my words, when Babar Azam makes a comeback again, he will be a bigger player than any other player in the world, including Virat Kohli. He will be matched with names like Garry Sobers and Sir Viv Richards,” Iqbal said on ARY Podcast. “He has that class element. When …
