At least 12 workers were trapped inside an under-construction road tunnel in Sikkim’s Namchi district after a landslide blocked its entrance on Monday afternoon, police said. The landslide also triggered a suspected gas leak inside the Samardung tunnel, they said. The gas is believed to be naturally emanating from underground strata or rock formations disturbed by the landslide, they added. Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), SDRF, police and the Fire and Emergency Services are carrying out the rescue operation, a police officer said. “Rescue operations are underway, but the operation has been complicated by the presence of gas inside the tunnel. Several rescue personnel experienced dizziness and lost consciousness while attempting to reach the trapped workers,” he said. “Ambulances have been kept on standby, while rescuers equipped with gas masks are trying to reach the trapped workers inside the tunnel,” he added. A PNG gas pipeline was damaged during road construction work at Kumarapuram here on Tuesday afternoon, causing a leak. An officer from Chackai fire station said that information of the gas leak was received around 12.50 pm and a team was immediately dispatched to the area. The over 1,500-km journey back to their home State followed a deadly ammonia gas leak at their workplace – a seafood processing plant in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur – on June 21. Sari and her sisters Sasmita and Ratni were witness to the death and destruction caused by the gas leak that tore through the seafood plant, killing their co-workers, mostly women and minor girls from Odisha. Of the 17 migrant workers who died, 14 were from Odisha – all in their teens and from the Juang community – two from Assam, and one from Jharkhand. Some of the workers are still undergoing treatment in hospitals in Tamil Nadu.
