India vs South Africa: What did Suryakumar Yadav and Co focus on during training, two days ahead of Super 8s clash? Rigorous catching, taking on spin | Cricket News

5 min readAhmedabadFeb 20, 2026 09:15 PM IST India waited until the twilight gleam receded and the lights flickered to life at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Until then, they busied themselves with a boisterous session of rondo, where Tilak Varma unfurled a gorgeous back-heel and Arshdeep Singh wafted the thin air numerous times, where they gambolled around with the football, passing waywardly and jogging playfully, where the coach Gautam Gambhir summoned an impromptu huddle as his charges kept nodding at the instructions. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW VIDEO Whatever transpired in the huddle might have been rousing, because they busily dispersed to form three distinct groups of five players each, spaced out like a triangle. At one end was T Dilip, pulling and slogging the ball to the five-some clustered towards house left, standing in the midwicket region to where the fielding coach was batting. Right opposite to him was Ryan Ten Doeschate, feeding flat low-fliers to those perched in midwicket region; parallel to him was Sitanshu Kotak performing the same routine to sharpen their catching, one …

Dinesh Karthik: ‘Is Gautam Gambhir happy with his current set of players?’ | Cricket News

“I think, when it comes to Gautam Gambhir, you got to cut him some slack a little bit because I think he has come in at a very tough time. Post a successful regime of Rahul Dravid, it’s never easy to fill those shoes,” Karthik told Cricbuzz. Karthik lauded Gambhir for his role in making India’s T20 side stronger but admitted Test cricket has been hard for the coach. “He has found success, an immense success in T20 cricket, where he’s had a lot of young boys. He’s been able to have, I would dare say, a massive influence over them. But in Test cricket, he has had the going very hard. “Yes, the Bangladesh series was a success and I think post that, things have just gone downhill for him,” he said. Robin Uthappa on comparison between Gautam Gambhir and Greg Chappell: ‘I have not met a more straightforward person than Gauti’ | Cricket News

Robin Uthappa on comparison between Gautam Gambhir and Greg Chappell: ‘I have not met a more straightforward person than Gauti’ | Cricket News

In Gambhir’s era, India have lost 0-3 at home against New Zealand, a first Test series loss in twelve years and 1-3 against Australia, losing the Border Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in a decade. In the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Test series, The Indian Express has reported the rift inside the dressing room. Shortly after India lost seven wickets in 20.4 overs and handed the Melbourne Test to Australia, head coach Gautam Gambhir had some stern words for the entire squad in the dressing room. There are speculations that the senior cricketers are not having with Gambhir’s style of working. Gambhir’s coaching style has been compared to Greg Chappell, who had a famous fall out with the then senior Indian cricketers during his coaching tenure. Indian coach Gautam Gambhir. (FILEphoto) “I disagree with you that his style is similar to Greg Chappell’s,” Robin Uthappa said on Lallantop. “I don’t agree with it at all. I have not met a more straightforward person than Gauti. “He is very direct. You may not like what he says, …

India coach Gautam Gambhir to fly back home because of ‘personal reasons’ | Cricket News

India cricket team coach Gautam Gambhir will fly back home from Australia on Tuesday because of ‘personal reasons’ but will rejoin the team before the start of the second Test, a pink-ball game, which begins in Adelaide from December 6. “Gambhir has informed us that he will be travelling back home and will join the team before the start of the second Test. He has cited personal reasons and the BCCI has accepted his request,” a BCCI source told The Indian Express on Monday. The Indian team will travel to Canberra on Wednesday to play a two-day pink-ball tour game, which is scheduled to start from Saturday. In absence of Gambhir, the Indian team’s support staff comprising assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, bowling coach Morne Morkel and fielding coach T Dilip will oversee training sessions in consultation with captain Rohit Sharma, who arrived in Australia on Sunday. Sharma, who missed the first Test after the birth of his second child, was seen having a practice session in Perth on Monday. “And just …

‘India were outplayed in all departments by New Zealand and we accept that criticism and move forward’ – Gautam Gambhir | Cricket News

Gautam Gambhir has made it clear that social media-triggered opinionated tsunamis don’t faze him one bit. And they will certainly not shape how he views the performances of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. When asked ahead of the team’s departure to Australia, about the avalanche of chatter on social media on Indian cricket, he retorted, “What difference does it make, tell me, social media? What difference does it make in my life? For that matter, anyone’s life?” Gambhir said that he had known from the outset that it’s going to be a highly difficult job and highly prestigious job as well, so he’s not stressed with facing the heat. “And honestly, I don’t think as if I’m feeling the heat because my job is to be absolutely honest. There are some incredibly tough people in that dressing room who have achieved some great things for the country and will continue to achieve some great things for the country. So, it’s an absolute honour to be coaching them and coaching India,” he insisted. He was asked …

Why the star-obsessed Indian cricket needs commoner coach Gautam Gambhir? | Ipl News

Back in 2012, Kolkata Knight Riders, like this season, was in Chennai for their first IPL final. On the eve of meeting defending champions CSK in their den, Gautam Gambhir, the coach now and captain then, needed to take one very difficult call. He was keen to have Manvindra Bisla as his opening partner but for that he needed to keep Brendon McCullum out. Who drops the original Bazballer, IPL’s first brand ambassador for an uncapped out-of-form 20-something Jat boy from Hisar for the final? Well, Gambhir does. It wasn’t a popular decision, even McCullum had expectedly sulked. Opinions and the mood would change by late evening when Bisla was in the middle of the innings of his life. Years later, Bisla, now a part of IPL’s Haryanvi commentary panel, still gets asked about his match-winning 48-ball 89 which had five sixes that helped KKR win the first title. Others in the box, Indian and foreign TV pundits, while hyping the play-off frenzy, have been talking about Gambhir’s courage to treat stars as commoners and …

RCB’s Swapnil Singh, a late bloomer in IPL, nearly left to play in Bangladesh League | Ipl News

Swapnil Singh, at the age of 33, is enjoying his best IPL season while playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). An IPL late bloomer, he nearly left for Bangladesh to play 50-over league cricket when his career was going nowhere three years ago. The spin-bowling all rounder has taken six wickets for RCB with an economy rate of 8.76 and even opened the bowling at times. He has played in each of the six games RCB won on the spin to qualify for the playoffs after languishing at the bottom of the table. This isn’t Swapnil’s first outing with an IPL team but it is the first time he has got a long run and made an impact. Swapnil made his IPL debut for Punjab Kings in 2016 and then played two games for Lucknow SuperGiants (LSG) last year. He was first a net bowler for LSG. It was during practice sessions for LSG two years ago that the former Baroda all-rounder caught the attention of coach Andy Flower. When the Zimbabwean moved to RCB …
