Jasprit Bumrah the latest to draw Sunil Gavaskar’s ire over no-balls | Cricket News

2 min readMay 5, 2026 10:22 AM IST Batting great and former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has often quite publicly made known his disdain for bowlers conceding front-foot no-balls and as it turns out, even someone of the stature of Jasprit Bumrah is not immune from this. Bumrah is enduring arguably his worst season in the Indian Premier League this year and it simply didn’t get better on Monday night in Mumbai Indians’ match against the Lucknow Super Giants. The ace pacer went wicketless and conceded 45 runs in his four overs. His night was summed up in the 14th over, which was his third of the match. Bumrah sent in the third ball back of a length. It stayed low and moved away late a tad bit from the batsman Himmat Singh, who poked at it and ended up edging it to the wicketkeeper. Except none of it mattered because the siren went off for a front-foot no-ball. That was alread his second no-ball of the day. Bumrah followed that up by smearing a …

‘I don’t care how many runs you’ve scored’: Pak-born cricketer slams Gavaskar’s ‘vile’ comments on Indian-owned teams buying Pakistan players | Cricket News

3 min readMar 17, 2026 04:40 PM IST India batting legend Sunil Gavaskar drew criticism from former English cricketer, Azeem Rafiq, for his recent take on the signing of Pakistan players by Indian-owned teams in The Hundred 2026 auction last week. In a column on Mid-Day, Gavaskar reflected on the Sunrisers Leeds franchise’s decision to sign up Pakistan mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed at the auction table last week for £190,000. Sunrisers are owned by the Chennai-based Sun TV Network, which also owns the Sunerisers Hyderabad in the IPL. “The furore created by the acquisition of a Pakistani player by the Indian owner of a franchise in The Hundred is hardly surprising. Ever since the Mumbai attacks in November 2008, Indian franchise owners have simply ignored Pakistani players for the IPL,” wrote Gavaskar in his column for Mid-Day. Gavaskar added that the fees paid to the Pakistan cricketers could soon facilitate military operations in the country. “Although belated, the realisation that the fees that they pay to a Pakistani player, who then pays income tax to …

‘Two powerplay overs for Jasprit Bumrah’: Sunil Gavaskar’s advice to India before T20 World Cup semi-final against England | Cricket News

‘Two powerplay overs for Jasprit Bumrah’: Sunil Gavaskar’s advice to India before T20 World Cup semi-final against England | Cricket News

5 min readMar 3, 2026 12:34 PM IST Jasprit Bumrah may have taken only nine wickets in the ongoing T20 World Cup, but his impact has gone beyond numbers. The 32-year-old has struck at crucial moments in both the powerplay and middle overs, as was evident on Sunday when he dismissed Shimron Hetmyer and Roston Chase in the 12th over to leave the West Indies in a spot of bother in Kolkata. Ahead of the semifinal against England on Thursday, former India captain and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar said Bumrah should bowl two overs in the powerplay to target England’s top order early and seize early control. “I do believe that he should be bowling at least two overs in the powerplay. Because as a new ball bowler with a brand new ball, if he can get those two wickets, if he can get Jos Buttler, Phil Salt and Harry Brook, he will have pretty much broken the back of the England batting. So him coming in to bowl the fifth over and four overs …

Sunil Gavaskar’s veiled ‘has-beens’ shot at Ben Stokes while arguing England should’ve played more first class cricket before Ashes | Cricket News

England finally ended their 15-year drought in Australia by winning the fourth Ashes Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The match itself has since been deemed as a farce, with a bowler-friendly pitch producing a two-day Test. However, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has said that the way in which the batting lineups on both sides collapsed showed how it is increasingly difficult for batters to play the long-game in red-ball cricket, having come to being used to scoring quickly in the white-ball formats. Gavaskar also took a shot at England captain Ben Stokes for his comments earlier in the series, while stating that the win in the fourth Test shows that the visitors would’ve been better served had they played some first class cricket before the series started. “England’s win, even though it came in the fourth Test with the series already lost, does prove once again that the more you play, the better you will get, especially in unfamiliar overseas conditions,” said Gavaskar in his column for SportStar. “The point, therefore, is should …

Delhi HC protects Sunil Gavaskar’s personality rights, orders takedown of objectionable content | Cricket News

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday protected the personality rights of former cricketer and commentator Sunil Gavaskar by restraining several websites and online platforms from illegally using his name or images for commercial gain without his consent. Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora also restrained several defendants from using Gavaskar’s personality traits through artificial intelligence and deepfake technology, and ordered that certain obscene content uploaded on the Internet are taken down. The high court said the URLs of the offensive material, infringing posts, videos and allied contents should be taken down by the websites within 72 hours and in case of failure, the social media intermediaries concerned should remove the content. The court listed the matter for further hearing on May 22. Gavaskar, in a statement, said this order “marks an important judicial recognition of a sportsperson’s personality and publicity rights in India, particularly in cases of unauthorised attribution, digital dissemination and commercial exploitation across social media and e-commerce platforms”. On December 12, the high court had directed social media intermediaries to act within seven days …

‘After MS Dhoni, he was perhaps best at helping captain with DRS calls’: Sunil Gavaskar’s high praise for Jitesh Sharma after T20 World Cup snub | Cricket News

‘After MS Dhoni, he was perhaps best at helping captain with DRS calls’: Sunil Gavaskar’s high praise for Jitesh Sharma after T20 World Cup snub | Cricket News

The big news coming out of India’s T20 World Cup squad announcement on Saturday was Shubman Gill’s exclusion from the team. But even though Gill’s omission is grabbing headlines, Jitesh Sharma was another player who missed out of the squad due to the return of Ishan Kishan and Rinku Singh. Former India World Cup winner Sunil Gavaskar had high praises for Jitesh, who has been solid behind the stumps in the recently concluded South Africa series, comparing the Royal Challengers Bengaluru player to the legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni on his DRS calls. “He (Jitesh) did nothing wrong. He was a very good wicketkeeper in his chances, and after MS Dhoni, he was perhaps the best at helping the captain with DRS calls from behind the stumps. It is tough on him, but he is young. He just needs to go back to domestic cricket and keep performing,” Gavaskar said on JioHotstar on Saturday. Gavaskar also backed the selection of in-form batter Kishan in the Indian squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Kishan, who has …

Captain Shreyas Iyer’s IPL super stat gets Gavaskar’s high praise: ‘All the plaudits went to someone else last year…’ | Cricket News

Shreyas Iyer’s remarkable bounceback has been one of the most endearing stories for Indian cricket fans in the 2024-25 season. After being snubbed from the BCCI contracts and his spot across formats last year, Iyer went on a sensational trophy-winning spree, starting with the IPL 2024 title as Kolkata Knight Riders captain last year. On the domestic front, Iyer was in the thick of things as he led Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title while leaving a mark in longer formats. An India comeback culminated with an immediate Champions Trophy triumph, with Iyer leading the country’s batting charts in Dubai The Mumbaikar added another achievement to his quiver on Sunday as he led the Punjab Kings to the IPL 2025 Playoffs, a first in 11 years for the franchise since their only final appearance in 2014. It seems as if the high price-tag signing and the KKR snub have only motivated the 30-year-old to bring out his best. “Shubman Gill Is More Competitive…”: Sunil Gavaskar’s Big Statement Amid Test Captaincy Dilemma

“Shubman Gill Is More Competitive…”: Sunil Gavaskar’s Big Statement Amid Test Captaincy Dilemma

The great Sunil Gavaskar feels the high-octane IPL is the perfect training ground for future India captains, providing the likes of Shubman Gill the required leadership experience before graduating to the highest level. Gujarat Titans skipper Gill is expected to captain India on the Test tour of England following the retirement of Rohit Sharma. Rishabh Pant is likely to be his deputy. Virat Kohli’s retirement, which came just days after Rohit’s decision, has left a massive void in the Test team. Gavaskar said it would take at least a couple of years for Gill and other potential leaders like Pant and Shreyas Iyer to become finished products. “It would take a couple of years (to groom future leaders) to get to the level of our super captains (MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli). All of them brought a different approach to captaincy,” said Gavaskar in a response to a PTI query on Star Sports Press Room. Pant is currently captaining LSG, while Iyer is leading the Punjab Kings in this IPL. “When you …

Sunil Gavaskar’s Blunt Take On Security Drill Amid India-Pakistan Tensions Post Pahalgam Attack: “Feeling…”

The relations between India and Pakistan have taken a turn for the worse following the terror attack in Pahalgam. The rising political tensions have once again put the cricketing relations between the two countries under the scanner and it is not clear at the moment if they will play each other in international competitions. India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series in nearly a decade and a number of former India cricketers have also insisted on a complete boycott following the attacks. The Ministry Of Home Affairs (MHA) has recently directed state governments to conduct drills in order to be ready for any kind of attacks. However, former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar believes that the drills will have no impact on the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) and added that there is no need to worry at all. “Till something happens, I don’t think it’ll impact the IPL. Yes, in the evening, when the match is being played, there will be of course, there will be perhaps the lights-off drill in …

Ex-Pakistan Star Calls Sunil Gavaskar’s ‘Asia Cup’ Remark ‘Stupid’ Amid Growing Tensions

Several former Pakistani cricketers, led by legendary batter Javed Miandad, have expressed deep disappointment over recent comments made by Indian cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar regarding Pakistan’s participation in the upcoming Asia Cup. Gavaskar, speaking to a news channel, indicated that given the current political climate, it was highly unlikely Pakistan would take part in the tournament, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. He noted that the BCCI traditionally follows the Indian government’s directives, suggesting that political tensions might prevent Pakistan’s inclusion in the event. Tensions between the two nations have flared following a deadly attack on tourists in Kashmir, which left 26 dead. India has blamed Pakistan for supporting the terrorists, suspended the long-standing Indus Water Treaty, and hinted at broader retaliatory actions. Reacting to Gavaskar’s comments, Miandad voiced disbelief. “I can’t believe Sunny bhai said this,” he told telecomasia.net, recalling their long-standing camaraderie on and off the field. “He’s a respectful, down-to-earth person who always stayed away from politics.” Former spinner Iqbal Qasim echoed the sentiment, saying he initially thought the statement …
