Mundamveli residents lay day-long siege to GCDA headquarters

After more than two years of arduous living marred by persistent leakage in their apartments, residents of P&T Apartment Complex at Mundamveli on Tuesday (May 26) laid a day-long siege to the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) headquarters at Kadavanthra here, raising fresh concerns over the alleged violation of mandatory distance norms separating the 110 kV extra high tension (EHT) line passing through their neighbourhood from the twin towers. A group of nearly 80 residents, including women and children, staged the protest outside the GCDA office, shouting slogans against endangering their lives and properties by constructing apartments allegedly in disregard of provisions governing EHT electric lines. Over 400 people from 78 families of the erstwhile P&T Colony in the city had moved into the twin towers built by the GCDA in January 2024. The protest was eventually called off after Kochi MLA Mohammed Shiyas visited them and promised to petition Chief Minister V.D. The denial was the latest episode of the prevailing uncertainty over the stadium rent payable by KBFC to the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA), which owns the stadium. GCDA Budget mulls land pooling for third phase of Infopark development

Nithin The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) would adopt the land pooling method to develop 300 acres of land for the third phase development of Infopark. In addition, automated parking lots backed by software to guide motorists would be readied at multiple places in Kochi, GCDA Chairman K. Chandran Pillai told media persons after presenting the Budget for 2025-26, which also happens to be the agency’s golden jubilee year. Of the 300 acres, a total of 100 acres would be dedicated as space for IT firms, while hotels, hospitals, sports and recreational arenas would be built in rest of the space. An amount of ₹1.50 crore has been set apart in the Budget for the purpose. The government has assured all help for the land pooling project, Mr. Pillai said. Demand to elevate GCDA as metropolitan development authority

VIBHU The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) has requested the Seventh State Finance Commission to take steps to elevate it as a metropolitan development authority and also to vest the authority with powers to issue municipal bonds. The requests were placed at a meeting presided over by Commission Chairman K.N. Harilal. GCDA Chairman K. Chandran Pillai spoke of projects undertaken by the authority and the need to strengthen and retain the authority for the development of the region. He cited the need for planned development and elevating the GCDA as a metropolitan development authority. Granting permission to issue municipal bonds will help implement projects in a better manner, he said. Mr. Pillai further sought grants from the government to implement and maintain public infrastructure projects and for initiatives like transit-oriented development (TOD) and land pooling.
