Vijay never knew: How a secret meeting cost him Madhavan’s 2002 blockbuster Run | Tamil News

4 min readHyderabadJul 6, 2026 05:49 PM IST Run made Madhavan an action hero, gave Lingusamy the biggest hit of his career and refused to leave either man’s legacy. It was also never supposed to be their film. Ahead of its re-release on July 10, the director has revealed that the 2002 blockbuster was written for Vijay, sent to AVM through his father S A Chandrasekhar, and turned down in a meeting the actor was never told about. During a recent interview, Lingusamy recalled that after the success of his debut Aanandham, the story of Run reached AVM through Chandrasekhar. “At that time, producers would only go to AVM. S A Chandrasekhar sent the story there and a meeting was called,” he said in an interview with Galatta Plus. “Saravanan sir heard the story and liked it very much. He said this is love with action. But they were making Thamizhan then, and he felt that after a film like Thamizhan, this one would look small. So they decided not to do it. And Vijay …

Vijay smashed MGR’s 35-year record in 2004, foreshadowed a political upheaval in 2026   | Tamil News

5 min readHyderabadMay 4, 2026 04:46 PM IST A record MG Ramachandran set in 1969 survived nearly four decades of Tamil cinema. When Adimai Penn released on 1 May 1969, it drew the largest opening-week audience any Tamil film had ever pulled. MGR produced it,  and starred in it. The film was many things at once: a historical drama, a mass entertainer, and a piece of political theatre dressed in costume.  However, it took 35 years for anyone to match what that film did at the box office. And that film was Vijay’s 2004 film Ghilli. Ghilli released in April 2004, a Tamil adaptation of the Telugu blockbuster Okkadu (2003), which had made Mahesh Babu a household name in Andhra Pradesh. The film ran for over 200 days in Tamil Nadu theatres. It became the first Tamil film to cross ₹500 crores at the domestic box office alone, and in doing so, it knocked MGR’s Adimai Penn off the record it had held since 1969, the highest first-week viewership for a Tamil film. Vijay was …

Trisha’s subtle election day nod to Vijay’s Ghilli sends Tamil internet into a frenzy | Tamil News

Trisha’s subtle election day nod to Vijay’s Ghilli sends Tamil internet into a frenzy | Tamil News

3 min readHyderabadApr 23, 2026 09:22 PM IST Trisha Krishnan voted in Chennai on Thursday morning, showed her inked finger to the cameras, smiled, and left. Nothing about that was unusual, because most of Tamil cinema did the same thing. When she shared her first post from election day, the photos were straightforward enough: a kurta, a polling booth, the obligatory ink shot. But the song playing over the post was “Arjunar Villu” from her 2004 film Ghilli, which also starred Vijay. One song, many theories “Arjunar Villu” is one of the most recognisable tracks from one of Tamil cinema’s biggest mass entertainers. Picking it as the song for an election-day post, on the day Vijay is on the ballot, was always going to raise eyebrows. Trisha said nothing, no caption explaining the choice, no clarification in the comments. She shared the post and walked away. The internet, predictably, did not walk away. Comments started piling up almost immediately. “Ghilli song: Code Word Accepted,” wrote one user, kicking off what became a recurring phrase in …

Trisha Krishnan’s 1st post after voting in Tamil Nadu election has Vijay’s Ghilli hint; fans joke ‘Anni on fire’

Trisha Krishnan’s 1st post after voting in Tamil Nadu election has Vijay’s Ghilli hint; fans joke ‘Anni on fire’

Fans joke ‘code word accepted’ Even if Trisha did not specify which party she voted for, the song was enough for Vijay’s fans to connect the dots. “Ghilli song: Code Word Accepted,” joked one, while another fan also commented, “Code Word Accepted.” One even wrote, “If u know u know know,” and another was more transparent, “BGM hints who you voted for.” Some fans even called her Anni, leaving comments like, “Anni on fire,” and “Trisha vetri kazhagam (victory party).” The comments were also filled with Vijay GIFs, including one of him waving and making a heart symbol. About Trisha and Vijay Trisha and Vijay were a hit pair and acted in Ghilli (2004), Thirupaachi (2005), Aathi (2006), and Kuruvi (2008). After decades, they were brought together by Lokesh Kanagaraj for Leo (2023). Vijay married Sangeeta Sornalingam in 1999, and she filed for divorce, citing infidelity. After news broke in February this year with claims that Vijay was having an affair with an unnamed actress, he attended a wedding reception in March with Trisha in …

How Vikram and Jyotika’s busy schedules led to the start of Vijay and Trisha’s on-screen journey | Tamil News

How Vikram and Jyotika’s busy schedules led to the start of Vijay and Trisha’s on-screen journey | Tamil News

The story of how Ghilli came to be is, in many ways, the story of how the best accidents in Tamil cinema happen. Director Dharani had watched the Telugu blockbuster Okkadu (2003), directed by Gunasekhar and starring Mahesh Babu in the lead, and immediately saw in it the bones of a Tamil film waiting to be made. For the lead roles, Vikram and Jyotika were the first choices, a pairing that made sense given the star equity both carried at the time. Due to other commitments, both were unavailable, and the movie almost did not happen. Then Vijay and Trisha were brought in to replace them. It was a replacement that nobody made much of in the moment. Vijay, at the time of Ghilli’s release in April 2004, was at an interesting stage of his career. The early 2000s had brought Tamil cinema a new generation of directors and a new kind of filmmaking, with names like Gautham Vasudev Menon, Selvaraghavan, and Ameer redefining what a Tamil film could look like and what it could …

Ghilli vs Thunivu Re-Release Box Office Collections: Thalapathy Vijay starrer continues to lead clash with Ajith Kumar’s film

Ghilli vs Thunivu Re-Release Box Office Collections: Thalapathy Vijay starrer continues to lead clash with Ajith Kumar’s film

Ghilli and Thunivu completed their one week of re-release at the box office yesterday. The Thalapathy Vijay and Trisha Krishnan starrer sports action drama continues to gain traction while the Ajith Kumar’s film is left with no fuel now.  Ghilli debuted with Rs. 55 lakh and went on to smash over Rs. 1.95 crore at the Indian box office in its opening weekend. Furthermore, it added around Rs. 1 crore to the tally on weekdays, bringing the opening week’s cume to Rs. 2.95 crore gross at the box office.  Talking about its rival re-release, Thunivu opened with Rs. 18 lakh and collected Rs. 42 lakh in its first weekend. The action drama could add just Rs. 10 lakh to the tally on weekdays from Monday to Thursday, taking the opening week’s cume to Rs. 52 lakh at the Tamil Nadu box office.  What should be noted is that the Thalapathy Vijay film was also released outside its home turf, while Thunivu was limited to its state only.  Going by the present trends, Ghilli should aim …

Ghilli vs Thunivu Re-Release Box Office Collections: Thalapathy Vijay starrer establishes big lead over Ajith Kumar’s film

Ghilli vs Thunivu Re-Release Box Office Collections: Thalapathy Vijay starrer establishes big lead over Ajith Kumar’s film

Re-Release has become a new trend in the post-pandemic times. Following the phenomenal success of Mankatha this year, another Ajith Kumar’s film, Thunivu returned to the cinemas, along with Thalapathy Vijay and Trisha Krishnan starrer Ghilli. The box office rivalry between the two superstars of Tamil cinema hasn’t been any secret. Here’s a look at how both Thunivu and Ghilli performed in their opening weekends.  Ghilli debuted with Rs. 55 lakh at the box office and went on to collect a superb Rs. 1.95 crore in its opening weekend, of which around Rs. 1.70 crore came from Tamil Nadu alone, while the remaining Rs. 25 lakh came from the rest of India. In contrast, Thunivu opened with Rs. 18 lakh and went on to wrap its first weekend at Rs. 42 lakh.  That said, the Thalapathy Vijay starrer film established a big lead of Rs. 1.53 crore gross over the Ajith Kumar film. However, one must note that Ghilli had an edge over showcasing. While Ghilli was released in around 250 screens in Tamil Nadu other than the …

Ghilli Re-Release Box Office Collections: Thalapathy Vijay starrer records strong start, grosses Rs 1.30 crore in two days

Ghilli Re-Release Box Office Collections: Thalapathy Vijay starrer records strong start, grosses Rs 1.30 crore in two days

Ghilli, directed by Dharani, is among the most iconic movies of Thalapathy Vijay. Originally released in 2004, the sports action drama returned to the cinemas this weekend and it opened to a superb reception. Debuted with Rs. 60 lakh, the movie recorded a jump on Day 2 and collected Rs. 70 lakh, bringing the two-day cume to Rs. 1.30 crore gross at the Tamil Nadu box office.  Based on the current trends, Ghilli is looking to record its first weekend of Rs. 2 crore or so, which is a solid result for a film, which had a mega re-release just 2 years ago and holds the record for biggest re-release for the Tamil film industry by a huge margin. For the record, Ghilli collected over Rs. 20 crore in its home state during its previous re-release, which is still a dream to achieve for other re-releases.  It will be interesting to see how the Thalapathy Vijay and Trisha Krishnan starrer performs in this inning. Even if the movie collects 1/3rd of what the movie did two years back …
