Announcing the curtains on its month-long membership drive, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Thursday claimed to have enrolled 33 lakh members into the party, 7 lakh more than its target of 25 lakh members, and almost double the votes party secured in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Former party president Sukhbir Singh Badal was the first to be enrolled as member on the first day of the membership drive on January 20. The working committee of the party had on January accepted Sukhbir’s resignation as party chief, days after Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh asked Akali Dal to implement its December 2 edict, by which the Sikh body had formed a seven-member committee to oversee the 100-year-old party’s reorganisation.
