Movie Review: In Jim Jarmusch’s starry ‘Father Mother Sister Brother’ families struggle to connect

Jim Jarmusch invites audiences into three family gatherings of adult children in his gentle tryptic “Father Mother Sister Brother.” Movie Review: In Jim Jarmusch’s starry ‘Father Mother Sister Brother’ families struggle to connect Don’t worry, you won’t be resentful you’re not part of any of them, not even the one where Tom Waits plays Adam Driver’s dad. To be fair, all the groupings are pretty cool on paper. In the first chapter, siblings Jeff and Emily drive together to visit their father for the first time in a while. She is keen to discover what happens behind the executive decisions made by the immaculately-suited manager Margot (Naomi Watts). There is an elusive visitor at the Rosefield Palace named Kei (Will Sharpe), who arrives, speaks illogical lines like he is “a Frequent International Traveler, a FIT,” and leaves. For a film that wants to …

Starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore, the film received an 18-minute standing ovation when it premiered at Venice earlier in the week – one of the longest in recent memory. Almodovar is a darling of the festival circuit and was awarded a lifetime achievement award at Venice in 2019 for his bold, irreverent and often funny Spanish-language features.
