US regulators seek to break up Google, forcing Chrome sale as part of monopoly punishment | Technology News

US regulators want a federal judge to break up Google to prevent the company from continuing to squash competition through its dominant search engine after a court found it had maintained an abusive monopoly over the past decade. The proposed breakup floated in a 23-page document filed late Wednesday by the US Department of Justice calls for sweeping punishments that would include a sale of Google’s industry-leading Chrome web browser and impose restrictions to prevent Android from favoring its own search engine. A sale of Chrome “will permanently stop Google’s control of this critical search access point and allow rival search engines the ability to access the browser that for many users is a gateway to the internet,” Justice Department lawyers argued in their filing. Although regulators stopped short of demanding Google sell Android too, they asserted the judge should make it clear the company could still be required to divest its smartphone operating system if its oversight committee continues to see evidence of misconduct. The broad scope of the recommended penalties underscores how severely …

The Chinese software engineer arrested on Wednesday in California for stealing Google AI technology. Linwei Ding, 38, also known as Leon Ding, faces four counts of theft of trade secrets, Garland said in a statement. Ding, who was arrested Wednesday in Newark, California, allegedly transferred confidential information from Google’s network to his personal account while secretly affiliated with Chinese-based companies in the AI industry. “The Justice Department will not tolerate the theft of artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies that could put our national security at risk,” Garland said. “We will fiercely protect sensitive technologies developed in America from falling into the hands of those who should not have them.” Ding’s arrest illustrates “the lengths affiliates of companies based in the People’s Republic of China are willing to go to steal American innovation,” FBI director Christopher Wray said, referring to China by its official name. “The …

Reddit Signs AI Content Licensing Deal With Google; Said to Be Worth $60 Million a Year

Social media platform Reddit has struck a deal with Google to make its content available for training the search engine giant’s artificial intelligence models, three people familiar with the matter said. The contract with Alphabet-owned Google is worth about $60 million (roughly Rs. 497 crore) per year, according to one of the sources. The deal underscores how Reddit, which is preparing for a high-profile stock market launch, is seeking to generate new revenue amid fierce competition for advertising dollars from the likes of TikTok and Meta Platform’s Facebook. The sources were not authorized to speak to media and declined to be identified. Reddit and Google declined to comment. Bloomberg previously reported Reddit’s content deal without naming the buyer. Last year, Reddit said it would charge companies for access to its application programming interface (API) – the means by which it distributes its content. The agreement with Google is its first reported deal with a big AI company. San Francisco-based Reddit, which has been looking at a stock float for more than three years, is preparing to …

Google Mulling Gemini AI-Powered Chatbot to Tell Personal Life Stories Using Photos, Search Activity: Report

Google is considering the development of a new chatbot that is capable of telling the story of a user’s life based on their photos and search history, according to a recent CNBC report. The search giant could use large language models (LLMs), such as the recently unveiled multimodal Gemini model, as part of a new AI project. Gemini is touted to compete with OpenAI’s GPT-4 model, and Google claims that its top-of-the-line model outperforms its closest competitor on some benchmarks. A CNBC report that cites internal documents states that one of Google’s AI teams has suggested that the company develop an AI-based technology to use data from users’ smartphones — including photos and their search activity — that will be consumed by an AI-powered chatbot. The project, dubbed Project Ellman, can then use the information to provide answers to “previously impossible questions”, according to the report. Instead of simply relying on “just pixels with labels and metadata”, Project Ellman would try to spot patterns in a user’s photos, studying photos and memories before and after …
