MeitY orders removal of Chinese BAT-BMS after viral e-rickshaw disruption videos

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has directed Google Play Store and Apple App Store to remove the Chinese BAT-BMS mobile application after concerns emerged over its potential misuse to remotely disrupt the operation of e-rickshaws, sources said on Friday.  The decision comes after a series of videos circulated on social media allegedly showed individuals using the BAT-BMS app to connect to nearby e-rickshaws via Bluetooth and remotely switch off their battery systems while the vehicles were in motion. The incidents have raised concerns over passenger safety as well as the security of battery management systems (BMS) used in low-cost electric vehicles. The ministry took cognisance of the matter after the videos went viral and has initiated action to restrict public access to the application, according to them. Moreover, the government is examining the broader cybersecurity implications of such vulnerabilities and is assessing further safeguards for connected battery systems used in electric vehicles. The BAT-BMS app — developed by Shenzhen Grenergy Technology — designed as a companion application for Bluetooth-enabled lithium-ion batteries. It …

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked Google and Apple to strictly act against the dissemination of obscene pornographic content through mobile applications hosted on their online platforms, remarking that it cannot permit an entire generation to be “ruined”. A bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia said in the present legal framework, the social media intermediaries have to play the “most vital role” and they should act against the dissemination of pornographic content not only upon receiving a complaint but even at the time of uploading by exercising due diligence. Is Google Rigging Search? EU’s Preliminary Findings Are In

Image: Guillaume Périgois/Unsplash The European Commission claims that Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has breached the Digital Markets Act. The specific allegation is that Google is self-preferencing on Search and the Play Store. The DMA applies to “gatekeeper” organisations that have a major economic impact in the EU (at least €7.5 billion in annual revenue in the EU per year for the last three fiscal years) and have more than 45 million monthly active users in the E.U., or more than 10,000 yearly active business users for at least three fiscal years. SEE: Advocacy Groups Criticise European Commission for Weak Regulation of Apple, Google More Google news & tips Google’s under scrutiny for Search and Play Store practices The European Commission has published preliminary findings on Alphabet and how it could be preventing competition. The concerns relate to two issues: self-preferencing in Google Search and “steering rules” in Google Play; these issues were looked into as part of a non-compliance investigation opened in March 2024. The DMA bans self-preferencing, which is when a dominant platform favours …

Google Play Store and Apple App Store hit by fraudulent trading apps in ‘pig butchering’ scheme | Technology News

Every year, a lot of fake apps find their way on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store, and the latest ones to join the frenzy are fraudulent trading apps that lure victims into “pig butchering” scams. In case you are wondering, pig butchering is a type of scam that makes investors believe they are getting high returns on their investments by making up numbers. Scammers often use social engineering techniques to prevent the user from withdrawing their pseudo profit and encourage users to keep on investing more and more money. According to a recent report by BleepingComputer citing cybersecurity firm Group-IB, these fake trading apps, which belong to the “UniShadowTrade” family of malware, were first spotted earlier this year in May and are built using the UniApp framework. These fradulent trading apps have also found their way to Apple’s App Store. (Image Source: Source-IB) Some of the most popular apps that lured unsuspecting users include SBI-INT (iOS), Finans Insights (Android), and Finans Trader6 (Android). Crypto Wallet Drainer App Identified on Google Play Store, Report Suggests $70,000 Stolen

A report by Check Point Research (CPR) uncovered a crypto wallet draining app on the Google Play Store, masquerading as the popular WalletConnect app. CPR found that the app used “advanced evasion techniques” to steal $70,000 (roughly Rs. 58.6 lakh) over five months from unsuspecting users. The malicious app, named “MS Drainer” after an analysis of its JavaScript code, is part of a growing trend of increasingly sophisticated crypto scams. Recent FBI reports also warn that cybercriminals have become more efficient in executing global attacks. “Check Point Research (CPR) uncovered a malicious app on Google Play Store designed to steal cryptocurrency marking the first time a drainer has targeted mobile device users exclusively. To pose as a legitimate tool for Web3 apps, the attackers exploited the trusted name of the WalletConnect protocol, which connects crypto wallets to decentralised apps,” the report said. The crypto wallet app, that has now been removed, managed to amass over 10,000 downloads. The fake platform emerged on top of the search on Google Play Store on searching for ‘WalletConnect’ owing …

Google Play Store now lets you update multiple apps at the same time | Technology News

Lately, the Google Play Store has been scrutinised by various government agencies around the world for its billing policy, but that hasn’t deterred developers from adding useful features. A few months ago, Google updated the Play Store with a new functionality that allows users to install two apps simultaneously. Now, the tech giant is rolling out the ability to update multiple apps at the same time. According to 9to5Google, the feature is now available across multiple devices, and we can also confirm the same. It looks like the number of apps that can be updated in parallel is limited to three, which is on par with what the Apple App Store permits. The report also states that the new limit is also applicable when installing new apps. You can now update up to three apps at once. Google Play Store rolling out ‘Ask someone else to pay for this item’ feature: Here’s how it works | Technology News

Google Play Store, the pre-installed app store on almost all Android devices, is getting a new feature that lets you ask someone else to pay for an app you want to use or for an in-app purchase. Announced at the Google I/O 2024, the new feature can come in handy if you are unable to make purchases or want someone else to pay on your behalf. According to a new report by Android Authority, the new Google Play Store functionality appears in the form of a ‘ask someone else to pay for this item’ button, and works with all apps that use Google Play’s billing service. To use the new feature, developers don’t have to do any additional work other than integrating version six or later of the Play Billing Library. Clicking on the button will generate a payment link which can be shared with the other person to complete that transaction. The new button will be initially available for Indian users. Microsoft Finds Major Security Flaw ‘Dirty Stream’ in Android Apps Totalling Billions of Downloads

Microsoft discovered a major security vulnerability in multiple Android apps last week that could be exploited to gain unauthorised access to apps and sensitive data on the device. Interestingly, this security flaw does not come from the system codes, but an improper usage of a particular system by developers that can lead to loopholes prone to exploitation. Notably, the flaw has been highlighted to Google, and the tech giant has taken steps to make the Android app developer community aware of the issue. In a post on its Security Blog, the Microsoft Threat Intelligence team stated, “Microsoft discovered a path traversal-affiliated vulnerability pattern in multiple popular Android applications that could enable a malicious application to overwrite files in the vulnerable application’s home directory.” The researchers also highlighted that the vulnerability was spotted in several apps in the Google Play Store that had a combined total of more than four billion installations. This vulnerability emerges when a developer incorrectly uses Android’s content provider system, which is designed to secure data exchange between different apps on a …
