Amazon and Google’s new cloud link could make it easier to deal with outages

Amazon and Google’s new cloud link could make it easier to deal with outages

Google and Amazon Web Services are teaming up to offer a link between their cloud services, as reported earlier by Reuters. With this tool, companies can establish a private connection between AWS and Google Cloud within “minutes,” giving online businesses a possible safety net if either of the providers experiences an outage. Though the tool is positioned as a way for customers to easily gain access to services from multiple cloud providers, Google says it comes with a “proactive monitoring system that detects and reacts to failures before customers suffer from their consequences.” It also offers a coordinated maintenance system designed to “avoid overlaps” that could impact service. In October, AWS experienced a major outage that took down a swath of services, including Fortnite, Alexa, and Snapchat. Both Microsoft Azure and Cloudflare suffered outages in the following weeks, raising concerns about the risks of relying on just a handful of major internet infrastructure providers. AWS plans on rolling out a link to Microsoft Azure next year. As noted in Google’s blog post, companies trying to …

Aluminium OS will be Google’s take on Android for PC

Aluminium OS will be Google’s take on Android for PC

We know a little more about Google’s long-gestating plans to combine the best parts of Android and ChromeOS into a single OS thanks to a job listing for a product manager to work on “Aluminium OS.” The job ad describes it as “a new operating system built with Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the core.” Android Authority first reported on the job listing, which is two months old, but wasn’t spotted until recently. It gives a name — or more likely codename — to Google’s new operating system for the first time, along with the initialism “ALOS.” It specifically describes Aluminium as “Android-based,” and says the company is looking at entry-level, mass market, and premium hardware for the OS. It doesn’t sound like ChromeOS will be going away entirely though, at least not at first. According to the listing, the team will be responsible for creating “a portfolio of ChromeOS and Aluminium Operating System” devices across various form factors (“laptops, detachables, tablets, and boxes”) and price points. That said, the ad also mentions the need to …

The fate of Google’s ad tech monopoly is now in a judge’s hands | Technology News

The fate of Google’s ad tech monopoly is now in a judge’s hands | Technology News

Judge Leonie M. Brinkema is on the clock. The federal judge, who sits on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, heard three hours of closing arguments Friday from lawyers for the Justice Department and Google over the right way to fix the company’s monopoly in advertising technology. Now the decision is in the judge’s hands, and she said the ruling was likely to come next year. The government has asked the court to force Google to spin off the technology that runs transactions between ad buyers and sellers, known as an ad exchange, and to share some data, among other measures. The company has countered with a narrower proposal. Brinkema, who ruled this year that Google had broken antitrust laws to maintain its dominance in some areas of ad technology, posed only a few questions. Most focused on whether a breakup of Google’s ad technology would take too long to alter the dynamics of a fast-moving industry. “I am concerned about the timing of all this,” she said, noting that a …

Judge wants to fix Google’s ad tech monopoly before it’s too late

Judge wants to fix Google’s ad tech monopoly before it’s too late

Google and the Justice Department had their last chance to make their case before Judge Leonie Brinkema Friday before she decides whether Google needs to be broken up to remedy its ad tech monopoly. Brinkema expects to issue her ruling next year, but understands that “time is of the essence,” as Reuters reported. While the DOJ wants the court to force Google to sell its AdX exchange, and leave open the option to force a sale of its publisher ad server, Google argued that only behavioral changes were necessary to remedy the issues the court found with its business. Brinkema previously ruled that Google held an illegal monopoly in two ad tech markets and illegally tied together two of its tools. She was keenly aware that Google will likely appeal the case, and noted the DOJ’s remedies “most likely would not be as easily enforceable while an appeal is pending,” Reuters reported. On the other hand, she said, behavioral changes could happen quickly, The New York Times reported. Timing was a crucial factor in another …

Google’s new Scholar Labs search uses AI to find relevant studies

Google’s new Scholar Labs search uses AI to find relevant studies

Google has announced it’s testing a new AI-powered search tool, Scholar Labs, that’s designed to answer detailed research questions. But its demonstration highlighted a bigger question about finding “good” science studies. How much will scientists trust a tool that forgoes typical ways of gauging a study’s popularity with the scientific establishment in favor of reading the relationships between words to help surface good research? The new search tool uses AI to identify the main topics and relationships in a user’s query and is currently available to a limited set of logged-in users. The demo video from Scholar Labs featured a question about brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). I have a PhD in BCIs, so I was eager to see what Scholar Labs pulled up. The first result was a review paper of BCI research published in 2024 in a journal called Applied Sciences. Scholar Labs includes explanations for why the results matched the query, so it pointed out that the paper discusses research into a noninvasive signal called electroencephalogram and surveys some leading algorithms in the field. …

Google’s AI Mode can now help you visualize your travel plans

Google’s AI Mode can now help you visualize your travel plans

Google users can now describe their next trip to its AI Mode in search and select the option to “Create with Canvas,” which will build out an itinerary in a side panel complete with data on flights and hotels. The document it puts together can lay out potential plans, with suggestions based on the user’s inputs, as well as photos and reviews from Google Maps. You can refine the plan it develops with follow-up questions or additional requests, like requesting hotel suggestions based on pricing and amenities or activities based on travel time. Users in the US will now have access to travel planning with Canvas on desktop if they’ve opted into AI Mode in Labs, with the drafted plans stored in the AI Mode’s history. The Canvas feature launched in March as a dynamic workspace for Gemini that could display real-time coding output or other information, like continuously-updating study plans, and has since expanded to become a part of AI Mode in Search. Google announced trip planning features for Gemini last year, but this …

Google’s Gemini for Home hands-on: AI that watches everything

Google’s Gemini for Home hands-on: AI that watches everything

This weekend, I turned my home into a test lab for Google’s new Gemini for Home AI and subjected my family to 72 hours of surveillance as it watched, interpreted, and narrated our every move. My purpose? To find out if an AI that sees everything is actually helpful or just plain creepy. “R unpacking items from a box,” read one notification from the Nest camera on a shelf in the kitchen. “Jenni cuts a pie / B walks into the kitchen, washes dishes in the sink / Jenni gets a drink from the refrigerator,” it continued. Sometimes, the alerts sounded like the start of a joke, “A dog, a person, and two cats walk into the room / Two chickens walk across the patio.” But these weren’t jokes. They were mostly accurate descriptions of the goings-on in and around my home, where I’d installed several Google Nest cameras powered by Gemini for Home. This is a new AI layer in the Google Home app that interprets footage from the cameras and — combined with …

And if you want to watch it all in glorious 4K resolution, Google’s TV Streamer (4K) is a great streaming device that’s currently available at Best Buy for an all-time low $74.99 ($25 off) as part of an early Black Friday promotion. If you prefer a different retailer, it’s also available at Amazon and Walmart for the same price. Google’s snappy set-top box supports all the major HDR formats, including HDR10 Plus and Dolby Vision, as well as Dolby Atmos audio. It offers twice the RAM and four times as much storage as the last-gen Chromecast, allowing for smoother performance and more room for apps. The included remote also makes navigation a …

Google’s Pixel Watch 3 and Anker’s two-headed USB-C cable are our favorite deals this week

Google’s Pixel Watch 3 and Anker’s two-headed USB-C cable are our favorite deals this week

There are plenty of good smartwatches out there, and Google’s last-gen Pixel Watch 3 is one of them. Right now, the 45mm / Wi-Fi model is available at Amazon, Walmart, and Target for $199.99 ($100 off), which is a new low price and $150 less than the Pixel Watch 4. In her review, our own Victoria Song noted how impressed she was by the larger size’s lengthy battery life, as well as how versatile a companion it was to Android phones, particularly Pixel devices. For example, you can use the watch as a remote for your Google TV, download offline Google Maps navigation routes, and create voice recordings that automatically sync and are transcribed on a Pixel phone. The Pixel Watch 3 recently received an overhaul, too, as Google rolled out an update to Wear OS 6, which introduced a refreshed design and Gemini AI to the watch (our initial tests show that it still has a long way to go before becoming vital). On the fitness and wellness side, the Pixel Watch 3 can …
