Written by: Taranjit Singh Sandhu 4 min readJun 17, 2026 06:20 AM IST First published on: Jun 17, 2026 at 06:20 AM IST History seldom moves in a straight line. Every generation confronts its own challenges and must find answers suited to its time. When India gained Independence in 1947, its leadership needed to establish democratic institutions, integrate a vast and diverse population, build an administrative framework, develop scientific capabilities, and chart a path toward economic growth despite severe resource constraints. By 2014, however, the challenge was making existing institutions more responsive, efficient, and capable of delivering meaningful outcomes to a population of 1.4 billion in an interconnected world. In many respects, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s contribution has been to align governance with the aspirations of a rapidly changing India. Over the past decade, India has witnessed governance initiatives on a scale rarely seen anywhere in the world. More than 56 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened. Notably, more than half of these accounts belong to women, expanding economic opportunity and strengthening individual empowerment. …

Governance crisis forces Indian karatekas to miss second straight Asian Games

Governance crisis forces Indian karatekas to miss second straight Asian Games

Having recovered from Stage II lymphoma after undergoing months of chemotherapy and radiation treatment last year, international karate player Akshay Mahara Booshanam should be focused solely on preparing for the biggest competitions of his career. Instead, the Commonwealth Karate Championship gold medallist finds himself fighting for something far more basic: the opportunity to represent India. Indian karate remains mired in a long-running governance crisis, with multiple bodies claiming authority over the sport and no federation currently recognised as the National Sports Federation (NSF). The uncertainty has left athletes fearing they could miss a second consecutive Asian Games cycle. “We are losing eight years of our careers waiting to play in these major events,” Akshay told The Bridge. “The similar thing happened in the last Asian Games cycle, and the same thing is happening in this edition as well. We are waiting for an opportunity to play in these major events, and unfortunately, again we’re going to miss out on this opportunity.” For athletes whose careers are measured in Olympic and Asian Games cycles, the prospect …

Missing benchmark in urban water governance

Missing benchmark in urban water governance

India is building at an unprecedented scale. Across the country, highways are expanding into economic corridors, metro systems are reshaping urban mobility, airports are multiplying, and large-scale housing and industrial projects are transforming city peripheries. Flagship programmes such as PM GatiShakti, Bharatmala Pariyojana, Smart Cities Mission, AMRUT, UDAN and PMAY are accelerating infrastructure growth and redefining urban development priorities. Water (Pexels) Construction has become a visible marker of economic progress. Yet beneath this rapid transformation lies an environmental challenge that remains largely invisible: The enormous quantity of water consumed during construction activities. At a time when Indian cities are grappling with groundwater depletion, seasonal water shortages, tanker dependence, and increasing climate variability, construction water use remains one of the least measured and least regulated components of urban water governance. And that is becoming a serious policy gap. Water is essential for almost every stage of construction. It is used for concrete mixing, curing, plastering, dust suppression, cleaning machinery, and supporting labour camps on-site. Studies indicate that building construction in India consumes nearly 2 to 3.6 …

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Tamilisai Soundararajan on Monday asserted that the primary focus of political leaders must remain on people’s issues and that development should not be forgotten amid political transitions. Addressing reporters at the Thoothukudi Airport, Soundararajan responded to Thoothukudi MLA Srinath’s statements about transforming the port city, stating that leaders must first understand and address the real issues faced by citizens on the ground. She advised newly appointed ministers to focus on their respective constituencies and public welfare rather than spending time on political criticism.
