US announces Iran port blockade: The laws governing passage through the Strait of Hormuz | Explained News

Following a deadlock in ceasefire talks, the US has announced a complete blockade of Iranian ports in response to Iran’s effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz. While Washington’s move may appear to mirror Iran’s strategy at first glance, it is essentially aimed at putting pressure on the energy-consuming countries, which Iran considers “friendly” and whose ships it has allowed to pass through the strait. Both the US and Iranian strategies have led to claims and counter-claims over their legality, involving terminology such as “territorial waters” and “international waters”. Here’s a look at the international legal framework that governs maritime passage and maritime combat in the context of the strategies being deployed by both countries. The Iran strategy The Strait of Hormuz is Iran’s main leverage at the negotiation table. Since the US-Israeli alliance began the war on February 28, Iran has maintained a chokehold on the strait by targeting vessels and laying mines. The move triggered one of the world’s worst energy shocks as the narrow passage accounted for around 20% of the global …

I-League gets new name, new format, new governing council | Football News

The second tier of domestic football, called the I-League till now, has been rechristened Indian Football League, with the new season starting on February 21 with a new format and new governing council. The announcement was made jointly by All India Football Federation (AIFF) and club representatives on Wednesday. The new-name league, still the second division in the Indian footballing ecosystem, would now consist of a Governing Council in which the clubs, the AIFF and the commercial partner would be represented and hold equity. For long-term followers of the I-League, this change in name isn’t new. In 1996, the AIFF started a semi-professional competition called the National Football League. Then in 2007, it was rebranded as the I-League. Later, the I-League was demoted to the second division of Indian football and the parallel venture called Indian Super League became the top tier in the country. There is no clarity about the platform (television or online) where Indian Football League matches would be aired during the reduced 2025-26 season and the AIFF and clubs are yet …

Pope indicates new governing style for Catholic Church with regular, annual cardinal meetings At the end of his first consistory, as such meetings are called, Leo asked cardinals to return to Rome for a second session at the end of June and from then onward on an annual basis for three to four days each year, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said. Cardinals said the proposed date for the second session would be June 27-28, before a big June 29 feast day. Pope Francis had largely eschewed consistories and the College of Cardinals as a whole to help him govern. Instead, he had a hand-picked group of nine cardinals who met every few months at the Vatican to advise him. Before the May conclave that elected Leo, cardinals had complained about Francis’ go-it-alone governing style and called for the …

Affiliate links are one of the forms of revenue that content creators rely on to generate income, and the firm’s latest policy is designed to prevent Chrome extensions from injecting affiliate links that could replace the ones posted by content creators. The move comes weeks after a popular extension accused of inserting their own affiliate links on websites. Google Cracks Down on Unauthorised Affiliate Code Injection The updated Chrome extensions policy for affiliate ads includes a new rule that prevents the addition of affiliate links, codes, or cookies unless the core functionality of the extension provides a “direct and transparent user benefit”.
