After Elon Musk, Greeks feel Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey doesn’t sound Greek to them | Hollywood News

Billionaire businessman Elon Musk may have his own reasons of calling out Christopher Nolan’s “anti-white racism” for casting Black actor Lupita Nyong’o as the Helen of Troy in his upcoming ancient epic The Odyssey, a film adaptation of the text by ancient Greek poet Homer.  But his concerns of the lack of Greek representation in the film have now found resonance in people from Greece itself. A guest contributor in the Greek City Times called out Nolan’s ignorance of their people in a recent open latter.  “Greek people did not disappear after the age of myth. Greek culture was not frozen in classical marble. Greek language was not extinguished in antiquity. We are still here,” they wrote, adding, “For more than 3,000 continuous years, Greek identity has persisted through transformation rather than disappearance.” “At every stage, something essential remained unbroken: language, memory, and cultural continuity. Greek is still spoken today, the oldest continuously surviving language in Europe. Not reconstructed. Not revived. But lived. That continuity matters when stories like The Odyssey are retold,” the author argued. …

Robert Pattinson saying ‘daddy’ in The Odyssey trailer has fans divided over ‘Gen Z dialogue’ in ancient Greek story

The trailer for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey dropped on Tuesday. The latest adaptation of Homer’s Greek epic stars Matt Damon in the titular role, along with a stellar support cast including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron. And while the first glimpse of naval battles and the Cyclops has fans excited, many said they were turned off by some of the dialogue, particularly one exchange between Tom and Robert that feels very 21st-century. Robert Pattinson plays Antonius in The Odyssey. The controversial ‘daddy’ line in The Odyssey trailer The Odyssey is the story of Odysseus, the mythical king of Ithaca, who struggles to return home after the Trojan War. As he made his way home, his wife, Penelope, was beset by a string of suitors who hoped to marry her and rule Ithaca. In Nolan’s adaptation, Robert Pattinson plays Antinous, one such suitor, courting Anne Hathaway’s Penelope, much to the dismay of her son, Telemachus (Tom Holland). One scene in the trailer shows the villainous Antinous trying to convince …

X-Ray Reveals Ancient Greek Philosopher Behind Charred Vesuvius 2,000-Year-Old Scroll

X-Ray Reveals Ancient Greek Philosopher Behind Charred Vesuvius 2,000-Year-Old Scroll

Researchers have revealed the identity of the author behind a charred scroll from the first century BC, thanks to the advanced X-ray technology. Found in the ancient Roman town of Herculaneum, the scroll contains part of a multi-volume work titled “On Vices” and was written by an ancient Greek philosopher, Philodemus.  The charred scroll was recovered from a Roman villa, believed to have been the home of Julius Caesar’s father-in-law. The scroll, along with the villa, was buried during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago.  Using the X-ray, the researchers were able to look inside the burned scroll, which was made up of ancient paper called carbonised papyrus. They virtually unwrapped the scroll and, for the first time with this method, managed to uncover important details such as the title and the author. This was made possible because the X-ray images revealed traces of ink lettering. Dr Michael McOsker, a papyrologist at University College London, told The Guardian, “It’s the first scroll where the ink could just be seen on the scan. …

It cited public finances that “have improved more quickly than we had expected” as a key factor in its decision.
