What happens when Trump’s America steps back on climate — and what India must do

5 min readFeb 13, 2026 06:44 PM IST First published on: Feb 13, 2026 at 06:44 PM IST US President Donald Trump on Thursday repealed what is known as the Endangerment Finding (EF), issued in 2009 by the US’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EF held that global warming due to greenhouse gases endangers public health and the welfare of current and future generations. By revoking it, the EPA is being directed away from its foundational principle that, for nearly two decades, required it to treat these emissions as a matter of human well-being. Its core mission is to safeguard the natural environment and protect human health from risks and pollution. Over time, it became one of the leading institutions supporting climate action in the US and abroad. The EF provided strong legal backing for mitigation efforts by federal and state authorities and private stakeholders. It also contributed significantly to the adoption of the historic Paris Agreement, and its precursor, the Kyoto Protocol, almost 30 years ago. Even after the US government did not ratify …

Green energy space gets crowded with IPOs: What should you look for before investing | Smart Stocks News

Energy stocks regained momentum in 2023 as new policy initiatives drove investments in the sector. The Nifty Energy Index doubled between March 1, 2023 and September 27, 2024, with green energy stocks leading the rally. Several small and medium sized renewable energy companies capitalised on this bullish momentum and their strong revenue and earnings growth in FY24 to make their debut in the stock market. The driving force behind this surge is India’s ambitious target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. So far, the country has crossed 217 GW, with 27.9 GW added in 2024 alone. While this growth is impressive, reaching the 500 GW milestone will require an annual capacity addition of 50 GW — a challenge the sector is ready to embrace. However, the Nifty Energy Index has dipped 30% from its September 2024 peak, making investors wonder if the green energy boom has hit a speed breaker. For this one needs to understand what factors are influencing the industry’s future growth prospects. Story continues below this ad Three …

Mahagenco initiates towards sustainable Green energy

India has set an ambitious goal to reduce the carbon intensity of its economy by 45% by the end of this decade, aiming to achieve 50% of its cumulative electric power from renewable sources by 2030 and reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. Maharashtra, as the economic powerhouse of India, plays a crucial role in this transition, given its significant contribution to the nation’s growing economy. Over the past ten years, energy demand and peak consumption in the state have seen a sharp rise. Maharashtra’s energy requirements have consistently increased, leading to a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of around 6.5%. Currently, the state’s power demand fluctuates between 28 GW to 29 GW, and by 2035, this figure is expected to reach approximately 59 GW, indicating an annual power demand growth of 6% to 7%. In light of these developments, Mahagenco has undertaken initiatives to expand its capacity with new thermal units, renovate and modernise ageing units (4600 MW), and shift significantly towards sustainable green energy. Mahagenco aims to make a better tomorrow with Green …

6 Years of SATAT: How The Initiative Has Shaped India’s Green Fuel Revolution

Launched in October 2018 by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) initiative marked a pivotal moment in India’s pursuit of green energy solutions. The initiative aimed to establish a network of Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) production plants, producing cleaner fuel from organic waste sources and contributing to a more sustainable transportation sector. As SATAT completes six years, it is an opportune time to reflect on its progress, impact, and the role it has played in shaping India’s green fuel landscape. Early Progress and Milestones The initial years of SATAT were marked by a surge of enthusiasm from both entrepreneurs and investors, eager to tap into the potential of the nascent CBG sector. This resulted in the issuance of 4,090 Letters of Intent (LoIs) for the establishment of CBG plants, indicating a strong interest in establishing production facilities across the country. By June 2022, 35 CBG plants were successfully commissioned and were operational, producing compressed biogas and contributing to the diversification of India’s energy mix. These initial successes, however, …

T.N. Electricity Regulatory Commission permits study of harmonics at renewable energy generation sources

File photograph used for representational purposes only | Photo Credit: PERIASAMY M The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) has permitted PQ Welfare Consortium, a voluntary organisation working on power quality, to do a sample study of harmonics at wind and solar energy generation sources. A.D. Thirumoorthi, who is part of the Consortium, told The Hindu that High Tension (HT) electricity consumers in Tamil Nadu have harmonics standards, but these are yet to be implemented fully because of a lack of harmonics measuring meters, which are largely imported. Now, TNERC wants to develop harmonics standards for renewable energy generators and have a report prepared by a consultant for this. PQ Welfare Consortium offered to do a sample study, free, to get actual details about whether there is pollution at the energy (wind and solar) generating points and if the pollution is affecting sub-stations and consumers. The TNERC, in a communication dated April 10, agreed to permit the Consortium to do the study. Mr. Thirumoorthi said the plan is to study harmonics at five solar energy and five …
