Chandrababu Naidu virtually inaugurated Hero Future Energies’ (HFE) green hydrogen blending plant at Rockman Industries in Tirupati, from the Secretariat on Monday (March 03).  The project pioneers the mixing of green hydrogen with PNG/LPG for industrial furnace applications, which significantly reduces carbon emissions.  The initiative is expected to align with the Swarna Andhra Vision 2047 and the State’s commitment to becoming a global hub for green hydrogen production and adoption, for which the government launched the Integrated Clean Energy ICE Policy – 2024 (ICEP) with a target to create 160 GW renewable energy capacity.  Addressing the gathering on the plant premises, Mr. Naidu said with its strong industrial base and progressive energy policies, Andhra Pradesh (A.P.) was well-positioned to lead India’s green hydrogen revolution, and that the State government was determined to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, …

IIT Bombay research finds potential pathway to decarbonise steel industry

IIT Bombay research finds potential pathway to decarbonise steel industry

Steel, a vital component of infrastructure and economy, contributes massive environmental damage in its production process as it relies heavily on coal as a fuel. In the steel production process, carbon (primarily sourced from coal and natural gas) reacts with iron ore to produce molten iron, which is then refined to create steel. This process generates vast amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) and as a result, the steel industry alone, globally, emits over 3.7 billion metric tons of CO2 every year, contributing to 7–9 % of carbon emissions.   To combat the issue, a team of researchers, Arnab Dutta, Sukanta Saha, Suhana Karim and Santanu Ghorai, from the Chemistry Department at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) have come up with a set of sustainable catalysts for generating green hydrogen that can be utilised in steel making process via hydrogen-based direct reduction of iron (H-DRI) method.  In a recent review published in the Journal of Energy and Climate Change, researchers from IIT Bombay, led by Professor Arnab Dutta, have collated the advances made in the …

India, Sweden can forge stronger partnership in climate solutions: Swedish officials | News Today News

India and Sweden can deepen their collaboration in innovation and green technology with a focus on addressing global climate challenges through sustainable industrial practices and renewable energy solutions, Swedish officials said. Officials of the Embassy of Sweden and Business Sweden, during an interaction with PTI, emphasised the shared potential for innovation and large-scale implementation of sustainable practices. “Sweden is a leader in green technologies while India has unparalleled capacity for large-scale implementation of the same. Together we can explore technologies like green hydrogen, carbon capture and circular economy practices,” said Christian Kamill, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Sweden. He highlighted areas like green hydrogen, carbon capture and circular economy practices as promising avenues for collaboration. Kamill also pointed to Sweden’s strides in renewable energy and transport electrification, noting that over 50 per cent of Sweden’s energy already comes from renewable sources. “We are in the process of further increasing this share with extensive investments in wind and solar energy,” he added. On sustainable industrial transformation, Kamill said that India’s manufacturing capacity and Sweden’s expertise in …

Uttar Pradesh is set to emerge as a frontrunner in the field of green hydrogen market with its goal to achieve 1 million tonne per annum (mtpa) green hydrogen production capacity. In an interview to News18, Anupam Shukla, Director, Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), said the state is ready with its Green Hydrogen Policy 2023 which will play a pivotal role in achieving 1 mtpa green hydrogen production capacity. UPNEDA is the nodal agency designation for the implementation of the solar energy policy, bio energy policy, and other renewable energy schemes. Edited excerpts: What is green hydrogen and how is its production going to boost UP’s economy? Green hydrogen’s principal purpose is to help limit global warming, reduce dependence on fossil fuel by replacing grey hydrogen, and provide for an expanded set of end-uses in specific economic sectors. Green hydrogen is produced by the process of electrolysis of water using renewable energy or using banked renewable energy. Biomassbased hydrogen, produced using pyrolysis of biogas or other biomass products, is also classified …
