IT Ministry warning forces X to act on Grok obscene content in India

Microblogging site X has accepted its mistake and assured it will comply with Indian laws after the IT Ministry warned the Elon Musk-led social media platform on the Grok AI obscene content issue, government sources said on Sunday. Around 3500 pieces of content have been blocked, and over 600 accounts deleted, according to sources.  X has accepted its mistake, and said it will comply with Indian laws, sources said, adding that in future, the platform will not allow obscene imagery.  On January 2, the IT Ministry issued a stern warning to X over indecent and sexually-explicit content being generated through the misuse of AI-based services like ‘Grok’ and other tools. X’s ‘Safety’ handle, last Sunday, said it takes action against illegal content on its platform, including Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), by removing it, permanently suspending accounts. In its response, X had outlined the strict content takedown policies. “Anyone using or prompting Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content,” X had said, echoing the stance taken …

X acts on obscene Grok content after govt notice| India News

Microblogging platform X removed about 3,500 pieces of content and deleted over 600 accounts after the company accepted its mistake in handling objectionable content generated by its AI chatbot Grok and committed to complying with Indian law, officials aware of the matter said on Sunday. The AI chatbot Grok, developed by Musk’s xAI and integrated into X, has come under intense global scrutiny after users used its image-generation and editing capabilities to create and share non-consensual, sexualised deepfake images of real people, including women and minors. (AFP) The development came roughly a week after the ministry of electronics and information technology (Meity) first raised concerns over obscene and sexually explicit content linked to the chatbot. India’s move was part of a widening international crackdown that has already seen Indonesia order a suspension of access to Grok and investigations by the European Union and UK. “X has accepted its mistake. The company said it will operate as per India’s laws… Going forward, X will not allow obscene imagery,” said a Hindi communication shared by the officials …

X admits Grok AI objectionable image issues, blocks 600 offending accounts: Sources

After the government’s stern notice over Grok AI generating objectionable images of women without consent, Elon Musk-owned social media platform X has removed 3,500 pieces of content and blocked 600 accounts. X has admitted its mistake, government sources said, adding that X will not allow obscene imagery going forward. This action comes after the government had earlier expressed dissatisfaction over X’s response to its January 2 notice for the platform’s failure to observe statutory due diligence obligations under the Information Technology Act, 2000 and associated rules. As reported by The Indian Express last week, the social media platform had told the IT Ministry that it was open to permanently disabling accounts which engaged in such activity on the platform and committed to taking action against accounts creating such inappropriate prompts on its artificial intelligence platform. The platform had already blocked pieces of such content that were flagged by the government. The government, though, was unconvinced by the company’s response, owing to a lack of any technical explanation behind the issue, and any steps to prevent …

X monetised obscene Grok content: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP| India News

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi on Saturday accused X of monetising harmful behaviour instead of stopping the generation of sexualised images through its AI tool Grok, saying the platform had restricted the feature to paid users rather than addressing the underlying problem. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi made the comments on the same day when Indonesia temporarily blocked Grok over concerns that the AI tool could generate pornographic content, becoming the first country to restrict access to (ANI) Grok told X users on Friday that image generation and editing features were available only to paying subscribers, after widespread backlash over the tool’s use of AI to create and publish sexualised images. “It is unfortunate to see how instead of altogether stopping problematic, sexualised image generation through Grok, the platform has restricted its use to paid users,” Chaturvedi said in a post on X, adding that this could enable the unauthorised misuse of images of women and children. She described the move as “shameful use of AI” and tagged the Ministry of Electronics and …

Govt seeks legal opinion for action over Grok-generated obscene content| India News

The ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) is seeking legal opinion for action against X over obscene and sexually explicit content generated using its AI tool Grok, people aware of the matter said. Officials said the government has made it clear that Grok cannot be treated as a neutral platform tool. (X) On January 2, MeitY wrote a letter to X flagging what it called serious failures in preventing such content, warning that continued non-compliance could lead to the loss of legal protection under the Indian law. An official said the “opposite side” is very big and powerful, which is why their stand has to be unambiguous. “The law of the land must prevail,” said the official, adding that the same approach would apply to other platforms if their AI bots generate unlawful content. “In Grok’s case, the impact is accelerated because it operates on a platform like X.” Officials said the ministry has made it clear that Grok cannot be treated as a neutral platform tool. “The mindset has now changed. Earlier, they …
