BJP’s ground game covered booths, bastis and high-rises

The categorisation of poll booths into platinum, gold, silver and bronze, appointment of “high-rise pramukhs” and outreach to NGOs were among the strategies that the Bharatiya Janata Party deployed in West Bengal over the last few months. While the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) and other parties focussed on the exclusions wrought by the Special Intensive Revision(SIR) of electoral rolls, the BJP brought about a multi-pronged attack to overthrow the three-term TMC rule. BJP workers and supporters in Kolkata celebrate the party’s success in the Bengal assembly elections on Monday. (AFP) “What we changed since 2021 is that we went on the offensive. We took on the Trinamool from every angle making Mamata Banerjee very defensive for the duration of the campaign,’’ said a senior party leader posted in Bengal. The first step for the party was to improve organisational strength, although it knew it would be difficult to match the TMC on this front. Even so, it increased the number of active ground workers from just over 100,000 in the last election to around …

Waste collectors, burial ground workers not paid for months in Bengaluru

A long-standing demand for bringing waste collectors under the Direct Payment system has not been met, says a union leader. | Photo Credit: FILE PHOTO Waste collectors and burial ground workers haven’t been paid for several months in Bengaluru, making it hard for them to make ends meet. This has also forced these workers, in an unofficial arrangement, to seek money from citizens.  Eeranna, a waste collector in the East Corporation, said the last time he was paid his salary was in September, 2025 and since then he has been surviving on selling plastic he picks up from the waste collected from households and the money some residents give him on a monthly basis. From DMs to discipline: How Virat Kohli and Novak Djokovic found common ground | Cricket News

For two men and athletes who have never met in person, Novak Djokovic and Virat Kohli share an unusually personal connection. The bond began with a message over Instagram, and what followed was not just a polite exchange between two global sporting icons, but the start of something more meaningful, rooted in mutual respect. They come from different sporting worlds, separated by geography, culture and the nature of their sports. Yet, their journeys feel strikingly similar. Kohli, 37, and Djokovic, 38, both arrived at a point in their careers where they realised something had to change, not just in their games, but how they lived. For Kohli, that moment came in 2012. “I was 11 or 12 kgs heavier than what I am now,” he said in an interview with The Telegraph in 2016. “I had a horrible mindset about training, eating the wrong things, drinking, staying up late. Everything was wrong. I changed everything from the next morning,” he said. That decision didn’t just reshape Kohli the cricketer – it transformed the entire culture. …

Jobs, ‘bhoy’, ‘outsider’ tag for BJP: What worries Siliguri ahead of Bengal elections? | A ground report

Political activity is rising in the north Bengal city, known as the ‘gateway to north east India’, as voting approaches on Thursday (April 23).
