D Gukesh’s silver lining after ending last at Clutch Chess: ‘These guys won’t be there at FIDE World Cup’ | Chess News

Gukesh Dommaraju ended last in the Clutch Chess: Champions Showdown exhibition event after topping the standings on day 1. While Magnus Carlsen won the four-player event, Fabiano Caruana ended second and Hikaru Nakamura was third. D Gukesh lost five out of six games to Carlsen over the three-day tournament with the remaining clash ending in a draw. Asked about his performance at the Clutch Chess event, Gukesh said: “Obviously not great. The first day was quite promising. I started off quite well, but the second and third days were just completely off. At some point, it was very tough to start getting wins, and when it’s like that against this opposition, it usually goes downhill quite fast. But overall, great experience, especially before the FIDE World Cup. I mean, there are no better training partners than these three (Carlsen, Nakamura and Caruana). So the good thing is these three won’t be there in the World Cup. So, I had a better training than what I’ll be facing. So, I hope it helps.” World champion Gukesh …

Becoming the youngest world champion in chess history almost put a target on 18-year-old Gukesh’s back. While opponents have been hungry to defeat him, the world started to track his results, every draw and each defeat being used to weigh — rather unfairly — his worth as a world champion. Right after becoming the world champion in Singapore, the teenager from Chennai almost won the Tata Steel Chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee, before being thwarted by Arjun Erigaisi and Praggnanandhaa in the end. Since then, Gukesh has experienced an uncharacteristic slump: he went through the Weissenhaus leg of the Freestyle Chess tournament without a win, before experiencing more woe in the Paris leg of the Freestyle event. And then, his results in freestyle started to poison his form in classical chess as well: at the recent Superbet Classic Romania event, Gukesh won just a single game out of nine (against Levon Aronian) while losing to Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, and Alireza Firouzja and drawing with the six remaining opponents. Gukesh will experience another stern test in …

Gukesh says he’s looking at new ways to prepare after becoming world champion

Gukesh has had a whirlwind past few weeks after becoming the youngest world champion in the history of chess. The 18-year-old defeated Ding Liren in the World Chess Championship in Singapore to become the 18th world champion in the sport. Since then, he’s been to countless felicitations and events to celebrate his feat. He was also conferred with the Khel Ratna. “But now, I have started thinking about new goals, new tournaments and new ways to prepare. The objective and the approach will be the same, to give my best, to keep improving myself, and win as many tournaments as possible. So, I am looking forward to a fun year with a lot of learning, a lot of improvements and hopefully a lot of good results,” Gukesh was quoted as saying by PTI on Sunday at a felicitation function organised by his sponsors in Bengaluru.
