Movie Review: A real-life ’70s hostage drama crackles in Gus Van Sant’s ‘Dead Man’s Wire’

Movie Review: A real-life ’70s hostage drama crackles in Gus Van Sant’s ‘Dead Man’s Wire’

It plays a little loose with facts but the righteous rage of “Dog Day Afternoon” is present enough in Gus Van Sant’s “Dead Man’s Wire,” a based-on-a-true-tale hostage thriller that’s as deeply 1970s as it is contemporary. Movie Review: A real-life ’70s hostage drama crackles in Gus Van Sant’s ‘Dead Man’s Wire’ In February 1977, Tony Kiritsis walked into the Meridian Mortgage Company in downtown Indianapolis and took one of its executives, Dick Hall, hostage. Kiritsis held a sawed-off shotgun to the back of Hall’s head and draped a wire around his neck that connected to the gun. If he moved too much, he would die. The subsequent standoff moved to Kiritsis’ apartment and eventually concluded in a live televised news conference. The whole ordeal received some renewed attention in a 2022 podcast dramatization starring Jon Hamm. But in “Dead Man’s Wire,” starring Bill Skarsgård as Kiritsis, these events are vividly brought to life by Van Sant. It’s been seven years since Van Sant directed, following 2018’s “Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot,” …

Gus Atkinson needs to work on his body language

Gus Atkinson needs to work on his body language

Ahead of the Sydney Test of the Ashes series, former England cricketer Stuart Broad said that pacer Gus Atkinson needs to work on his body language. Giving his analysis on the pace attack of England at the Ashes series Down Under, Broad said Atkinson’s body language is not that of a Test-match bowler. “Atkinson has amazing attributes,” Broad told Sky Sports. “He still averages under 25 with the ball, he wobbles the seam, he can swing it, he’s tall, he’s consistent, but his body language is not of a Test-match bowler in the battle. He was work to do on that.” “That doesn’t matter so much when you’re playing teams you should dominate and beat, but not against top teams, so his areas of improvement aren’t attributes or mental ability to cope with pressure, but letting your team know you are leading this group,” said Broad. On Monday, the 27-year-old Atkinson became the third England pace bowler to be ruled out of the Ashes series because of a hamstring injury. Earlier, pacers Mark Wood and …

Anjali Ganapti makes a Kodava dessert, gus gusay payasam

Anjali Ganapati loads pandi onto thick slices of milk bread. It is early June in Bangalore, and her kitchen smells like slow-roasted spices. Two glasses of cold passionfruit juice gather beads, and we swipe every last bit of gravy off those floral plates. “I started to feel guilty,” she says, moving between her Phillips mixer and two bowls of pre-rice and jaggery on the counter. “Pig Out had given me so much: purpose, direction, happiness. I wanted to give back, but I couldn’t figure out how.” For over a decade, Pig Out, Anjali’s culinary enterprise, has introduced Coorg cuisine to Bangalore at music festivals, Sunday markets and restaurant pop-ups, through pandi curry folded into buns, wraps and toastadas. She carried Kodava cuisine to far corners of the country, and abroad, always in conversation with the land and its culture. For years, pandi curry was her anchor — a beloved dish, unmistakable Kodava in its flavour and colour, marked by the region’s distinctive kachampuli. A dish she describes as “an easy gateway into the cuisine.” Now, …
