Antonio Guterres calls for science-led AI guardrails and global standards

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday cited AI fragmentation risks, calling for global interoperability standards for better outcomes at the ‘India AI Impact Summit 2026’ here.  Guterres said that today, international cooperation is difficult. “Technological rivalry is growing. Without a common baseline, fragmentation wins, with different regions and different countries operating under incompatible policies and technical standards,” he warned. Addressing the Summit, he said that when we agree on how to test systems and measure risk, we create interoperability.  “So a startup in New Delhi can scale globally with confidence because the benchmarks are shared and safety can travel with technology,” he noted. Guterres also called for science-led AI guardrails to protect people and accelerate innovation. “Once we understand what AI systems can do and what they cannot, we can move from rough measures to smarter, risk-based guardrails. Guardrails that protect people, uphold human rights, and preserve human agency,” he told the gathering. According to the UN Secretary-General, AI guardrails must build confidence and give business clarity so innovation can move faster in the right …

Israel’s conduct of war in Gaza ‘fundamentally wrong’: UN chief Antonio Guterres

NEW YORK: There was something “fundamentally wrong” with how Israel conducted its military operation in the Gaza Strip and there are “strong reasons to believe” that war crimes have been committed, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told Reuters on Wednesday. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres speaks with Reuters Editor-in-Chief Alessandra Galloni (not pictured) during the Reuters NEXT conference, in New York City, New York, U.S.(REUTERS) “I think there was something fundamentally wrong in the way this operation was conducted with total neglect in relation to the deaths of civilians and to the destruction of Gaza,” Guterres said in an interview at the Reuters Next conference in New York. “The objective was to destroy Hamas. Gaza is destroyed, but Hamas is not yet destroyed. So there is something fundamentally wrong with the way this is conducted,” he told Reuters Editor-in-Chief Alessandra Galloni. WAR CRIMES More than 70,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the enclave’s health ministry, during the two-year-old conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants Hamas. Ukraine blasts UN’s Guterres over invitation to BRICS summit in Russia | News Today News

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry blasted UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Monday for what it said was his acceptance of an invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin to a BRICS summit, while staying away from a “peace summit” on the war in Ukraine. “The UN Secretary General declined Ukraine’s invitation to the first Global Peace Summit in Switzerland,” the ministry said in a post on the X social media platform. “He did, however, accept the invitation to Kazan from war criminal Putin. This is a wrong choice that does not advance the cause of peace. It only damages the UN’s reputation.” Putin hosts a summit of BRICS nations in the central Russian city of Kazan from Tuesday, aimed at showcasing the clout of non-Western countries. Leaders attending include Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
