Candidates 2026: Javokhir Sindarov’s whirlwind start makes him firm favourite at halfway stage in Open section | Chess News

3 min readApr 6, 2026 07:19 PM IST The race for the Open event title at the Candidates 2026 tournament has effectively become a two-way battle between Javokhir Sindarov and Fabiano Caruana. However, the Uzbek’s lead is so commanding that even at the halfway stage, it would now be a big shock for pre-tournament favourite Caruana to win the event. Competing in his first Candidates, Sindarov’s dominance has been absolute. He has forced decisive results against five opponents in a tournament where a draw is often as good as a win. He took down Indian hope R Praggnanandhaa, Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, Wei Yi and Andrey Esipenko while only Anish Giri and Matthias Blübaum could hold him to a draw. Since the introduction of the current Candidates format, a score of 6.0/7 is the best-ever start by any eventual winner, including such names as Magnus Carlsen, Viswanathan Anand, Sergey Karjakin, Caruana, Ian Nepomniachtchi (twice) and D Gukesh. But the Uzbek phenom stands above the rest at the halfway mark, outscoring Nepomniachtchi’s previous-best run by half a …

Candidates 2026: R Vaishali biggest Indian hope at halfway stage | Chess News

4 min readUpdated: Apr 6, 2026 07:08 PM IST R Vaishali has emerged as the biggest Indian hope at the Candidates 2026 at the halfway stage of the tournament in Cyprus. With four points from seven rounds – two wins and four draws – she is within striking distance of the lead in the women’s tournament. This marks a significant jump for Vaishali, who managed only 2.5 points after the first half of the 2024 Candidates in Toronto, a tally that included three losses, three draws, and a solitary win. While luck has smiled on Vaishali in this event, she has also seized every half-chance that came her way, putting herself in a great position in this event. Once she gains momentum, the Indian is difficult to stop. Her turnaround in Toronto, where she shook off a streak of four losses to win five consecutive games and eventually tie for second place, proves as much. However, the most impressive run so far in the women’s Candidates belongs to Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk. Her strong showing is …

Taylor Swift’s new book about her widely successful Eras Tour gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at what it took to put this show together. The singer’s tour set spanned 3 hours, with the singer performing her biggest hits from every one of her albums, so when she released Tortured Poets Department ‘halfway-through’ her shows, fans wondered if the new songs would be added to her concerts. They finally got their answer in Swift’s Paris Show, when the singer debuted her TTPD on stage.  In the recently released, Eras Tour Book, the 34-year-old revealed how she and her crew could pull it off. She wrote, “We conceptualized and rehearsed it secretly, and surprised the Paris crowd with it when we started our European leg of the tour.” Swifties would know that unlike some of her other records, the aesthetic of the songs in her latest album was muted and minimalistic. To match that, Taylor Swift wanted the vibe of her newly added tracks to be “minimalist, white, stark and bold.” This black and white theme made it a stark contrast …
