FIDE World Cup: Harikrishna’s loss leaves Arjun Erigaisi as last Indian left standing, but he remains favourite for title | Chess News

And then there was just one Indian left standing. From an unprecedented crop of 24 Indians who entered the FIDE World Cup in Goa, just Arjun Erigaisi finds himself in the mix to secure the title, or at least book one of the three spots into the prestigious Candidates tournament. On Sunday, veteran Pentala Harikrishna crashed out in the tiebreaks against Jose Eduardo Martinez Alcantara, marking the significant thinning down of India’s challenge. Harikrishna, who plays only selective tournaments these days, had played a version of devil-may-care chess in the previous rounds, exemplified by his tactic to sacrifice his queen, the most powerful piece on the board, on move 8 in a second round game and still winning the game and the match. But against the Mexican grandmaster Alcantara, Hari’s fight finally ended after six games across three time controls over three days. Some of India’s best bets have fallen early, including world champion D Gukesh, who started as the top seed but was sent home in the third round by German grandmaster Frederik Svane, …

At chess World Cup, P Harikrishna’s defiant run shows Indian chess has depth

November 15, 2025 07:27 AM IST First published on: Nov 15, 2025 at 07:27 AM IST Over the last few years, as chess prodigies got younger and younger, Pentala Harikrishna made a name for himself as a second by powering the women’s world championship-winning campaign of Ju Wenjun, and then helping D Gukesh become the youngest world champion. Now, perhaps fittingly, as Gukesh has crashed out early from the World Cup at Goa, Harikrishna is still in the mix, flying not just India’s flag, but also of the in-between generation that came between the two world champions, Viswanathan Anand and Gukesh. Out of an unprecedented 24 Indians who started the chess World Cup in Goa, only two — Arjun Erigaisi and Harikrishna — remain in contention. It has been refreshing to see the campaign of the 39-year-old from Guntur, who was once touted as India’s best bet to join Anand as part of the chess elite, but didn’t quite get there. The World Cup is the second most prestigious event on the chess calendar, and …

Chess World Cup: Pentala Harikrishna’s queen sacrifice variation, a 9-year-old ploy, gets him a win | Chess News

D Gukesh, the reigning world champion, won his first game of the ongoing FIDE World Cup to enter the third round of the event after defeating Kazybek Nogerbek Wednesday. But it was his world championship second, Pentala Harikrishna, who pulled a rabbit out of the hat with a stunning queen sacrifice and an opening ploy that he had first cooked up in 2016, but never used. Until Wednesday, that is. That too with devastating effect to defeat Arseniy Nesterov and enter the third round. Among the top Indians, Praggnanandhaa (facing Temur Kuybokarov), Vidit Gujrathi (facing 12-year-old Faustino Oro) and Nihal Sarin (facing Stamatis Kourkoulos-Arditis) will have to fight it out in the tiebreaks tomorrow after their games ended in draws. Arjun Erigaisi won both his games to enter round 3. A semi-upset for the Indians was the defeat of Aravindh Chithambaram to compatriot Karthik Venkataraman.
