Manchester United’s Harry Maguire gets suspended sentence over 2020 nightclub incident in Greece | Football News

2 min readMar 5, 2026 01:25 AM IST Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been given a 15-month suspended sentence over a nightclub scuffle on the Greek island of Mykonos in August 2020. Maguire originally was handed a 21-month suspended sentence shortly after the incident, but he appealed the ruling, which triggered a new trial at a court on the island of Syros, the region’s administrative capital. The appeals trial had been delayed several times, including once because of a lawyers’ strike. Maguire, who turns 33 on Thursday, was then convicted on related charges. The center-back has denied wrongdoing. In 2020, he said: “If anything, myself, family, and friends are the victims.” Maguire can appeal the ruling. After the incident, the United player had given his version of events in an interview with BBC and explained why he had not apologised for the incident. He had said that he was scared for his life. “An apology is something when you have done something wrong.” Talking about the incident he said: “I don’t wish it on …

‘Surprising how much they are backing us. We’ve disappointed them far too much’: Harry Maguire on Manchester United fans | Football News

Manchester United who are currently in one of their worst league runs in history with a club-record 18 losses in the Premier League, still have the fans support behind them, a fact that has even surprised their own players. United, however, still has a chance to repay their fans this season if they can win the Europa League against Tottenham in Bilbao on Wednesday. “They’ve been absolutely incredible this season. It is surprising us players how much they are backing us. We’ve disappointed them far too much. I say they’re the greatest fans in the world and I think this year they’ve proved that. It’s been remarkable when we get to play in front of them, even though we’re not performing,” defender Harry Maguire said. “Two months ago, we should have been in a better position where we are fighting for a Europa League position and the Champions League positions. That is what this club demands. When we found ourselves out of the (League Cup) and FA Cup it gave us an opportunity in the …

Harry Maguire once again found himself in the headlines, but this time for the right reasons as Manchester United secured a commanding 3-0 first-leg win over Athletic Club in their Europa League semi-final 1st leg. Stationed unusually high up the pitch, the 32-year-old defender drifted onto the right wing in the 30th minute, chopped inside with surprising flair, and whipped in a teasing cross that eventually found its way to Casemiro via Manuel Ugarte’s flick. The Brazilian made no mistake, heading United into the lead and triggering stunned admiration across the dressing room and the dugout. United captain Bruno Fernandes could hardly believe what he had witnessed. Story continues below this ad “I said it straight away: what a winger,” he said. “I don’t think even he thought he had that in his locker. No one was expecting that, I don’t think even the opposition was expecting that.” Maguire, who had scored the dramatic winner in United’s quarter-final second leg against Lyon, took the moment in stride. “It was nice to do a bit of …

Focus is to change his mind: Ruben Amorim on Manchester United co-owner’s recent criticism of select players | Football News

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim said that the team will be focusing on changing the mind of co-owner Jim Ratcliffe who in a recent interview had criticized some players of the current squad, saying they were not good enough and were overpaid. “If we’re being honest, in this moment everybody — me, all the players — we are underperforming this season. We can always change that, so I include myself in that part of ‘underperforming’,” Amorim told reporters. “You are talking about players like Casemiro, for example, that won everything (with Real Madrid) and we know that these kind of players can play so much better. So that is the focus and he was honest on that. The focus is to change his mind and to change all the people’s minds,” he added. Arsenal’s title hopes hits a snag as Mikel Arteta’s team go down 0-1 to West Ham | Football News

Arsenal’s hopes of catching up to Liverpool at the top of the table suffered an almighty blow when they were shocked by 16th placed West Ham United on Saturday. Arsenal, who are bereft of most of their forward players with Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli all out injured, suffered another setback when midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly was sent off with a red card. West Ham had taken the lead in the 44th minute when Jarrod Bowen scored from an Aaron Wan-Bissaka assist. The Gunners tried as hard as they could but could not find an equalizer with Mikel Arteta’s team still 7 points behind league leaders Liverpool who play Manchester City on Sunday. Last week, Spain’s Mikel Merino eased Arsenal’s attacking concerns with two late goals off the bench to secure a 2-0 win at relegation-threatened Leicester on Saturday that kept the Gunners in the Premier League title race.
