Syrian Interim President Pledges National Dialogue, US Kills Top Operative of Al-Qaeda’s Syria Arm

Syria’s interim president has promised to hold a “national dialogue” on the war-ravaged country. Ahmed Al-Sharaa made the remarks in his first address to the nation after he was appointed interim president for a “transitional period” a day earlier. Sharaa listed maintaining “civil peace” under “a single authority” among the priorities of his government and also issued a strong message to the previous regime. A day earlier after being appointed as interim president, Sharaa announced the dissolution of all armed groups involved in Assad’s overthrow. Sharaa said the transitional government will reflect “Syria’s diversity between its men, women, and youth.” “It would work on building the new Syrian institutions until we reach the stage of free and honest elections,” he said. n18oc_world n18oc_crux0:00 INTRODUCTION1:57 ARAB BACKING FOR SHARAA’S GOVERNMENT 3:55 US KILLS SENIOR OPERATIVE OF SYRIAN AL-QAEDA AFFILIATE Disclaimer: We do not own any of the content, ideas, images, or text presented here. New Russian Law Will Remove Taliban’s “Terrorist” Label, HTS Could Be Next

New Russian Law Will Remove Taliban’s “Terrorist” Label, HTS Could Be Next

Moscow: The Russian parliament has passed a law that would allow courts to suspend bans on groups designated as terrorist organisations by Moscow. The new law, passed by parliament’s lower house, the State Duma, paved the way for Moscow to normalise ties with the Afghan Taliban and potentially with the new leadership of Syria. It outlines a legal mechanism for groups to be removed from the country’s official banned list of outlawed “terrorist” organisations by order of a court if they cease terrorist-related activity. Under the law, Russia’s Prosecutor General could file a request with a court outlining that a banned group has “ceased” its activities “in support of terrorism.” A judge could then rule to remove the designation. The Taliban was in the first batch of groups to be added to the banned list, in February 2003, and Syria’s HTS was added in 2020. The Kremlin has been courting relations with the Taliban after the Islamist group seized power in August 2021 as US-led forces staged a chaotic withdrawal after 20 years of war. …

What Next For Syria And Its People

What Next For Syria And Its People

New Delhi: Syria’s future hinges on uncertainty after the abrupt fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Once thought unassailable, Assad’s rule collapsed under the pressure of a rapid offensive led by a group called Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), formerly known as the Al-Nusra Front affiliated with terror group Al-Qaeda, and allied factions.  Bashar al-Assad came to power in 2000, succeeding his father, Hafez al-Assad, who ruled Syria with an iron grip for nearly three decades. Initially, there were hopes that Bashar would bring reform and openness to Syria. However, these aspirations were dashed as he maintained the repressive structure of his father’s regime.
