Hindu Kush Himalaya region to face drier monsoon, but threats of climate-induced hazards remain: New analysis | India News

THE HINDU Kush Himalaya (HKH) region, the source of at least 10 large river basins in Asia, including Ganga, Indus and Brahmaputra in India, is likely to witness below-normal rainfall and above-normal temperatures in the upcoming monsoon, according to a new analysis. The combination of below par rainfall, owing to the El Niño weather phenomenon, and rising temperatures is also expected to increase drought as well as hazard risks from floods, glacial lake outbursts, and landslides, said the findings of the HKH monsoon outlook published by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The HKH region is a mountain arc stretching 3,500 km across Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, India, China, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Bhutan. Home to thousands of glaciers and large river basins such as Ganga, Indus, Brahmaputra, Yangtze, Irrawady, Mekong and Amu Darya, they support the food and livelihood security of about two billion people in this region of Asia. Complaints on encroachment of public spaces, potential flooding, fire safety hazards and other issues were raised during Hyderabad Disaster Response & Asset Protection Agency’s (HYDRAA) weekly grievance programme Prajavani | Photo Credit: BY ARRANGEMENT Hyderabad Disaster Response & Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) received 59 grievances during its weekly Prajavani programme on Monday (February 16, 2026), with complaints relating not only to encroachments on lakes, nalas, roads, parks, government lands and public-use sites, but also to potential fire hazards in residential areas. Oxygen cylinders in basements Several residents raised concerns over plastic and scrap shops operating close to houses, storage of inflammable materials in cellars, and commercial establishments functioning in residential buildings. Complainants urged HYDRAA to conduct immediate inspections and prevent fire accidents. HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath reviewed all 59 petitions and assigned them to the respective officials for redressal. Residents of Jubilee Hills Road No. 44 alleged that commercial activities in residential zones, including textile and furniture shops, posed fire risks.
