Ugandan woman with suspected Ebola symptoms shifted to Bengaluru hospital

Amid global Ebola scare, a 28-year-old woman from Uganda, who developed symptoms for the virus, was shifted to the state-run Epidemic Diseases Hospital on Tuesday, health department officials said. According to the officials, the woman, who had arrived from an Ebola-affected region, was moved from a hotel to the designated hospital as a precaution after she developed mild symptoms like body ache. Her samples have been collected and sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for testing, they said, adding that reports are awaited. As per protocol, a repeat test will also be conducted. The woman`s condition is currently stable, the officials said. Health authorities are monitoring her condition closely. Kolkata, The West Bengal government is set to introduce colour-coded identity cards for employees at all state-run hospitals as part of a move aimed at preventing unauthorised entry of middlemen inside medical establishments, a senior official said on Monday. Bengal govt to introduce colour-coded ID cards for staff at state-run hospitals Referring to a directive by the health department, the official said separate identity cards with distinct colours have been assigned to different categories of hospital staff, including doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians, administrative personnel, security guards and Group D employees. He said laboratory staff will receive orange cards, assistant professors purple, administrative staff black, nurses brown, security personnel maroon and Group D staff green identity cards. Sanitation workers will be issued yellow cards, while outsourced employees will carry blue ID cards. Dr Suman Singh, Director Health Services, said the decision was taken in response to sustained demands from residents of surrounding areas for access to specialist care closer home. As part of the initiative, services in psychiatry, dermatology, and paediatrics provide services at the hospital. The services are being offered under a slot-based model, like the one already implemented in peripheral areas under the PM-ABHIM framework. Under this system, specialists will provide consultations at the civil hospital for fixed two-hour slots. Doctors will be compensated based on the duration of services rendered, as per department norms. The primary objective of the initiative is to reduce patient burden on major hospitals while strengthening secondary-level healthcare facilities. With specialist consultations now available at Manimajra Civil Hospital, patients who earlier had to seek referrals to GMSH-16 or GMCH-32 for treatment. At a press conference, state Health Minister Dinesh Gundurao addressed the rising concerns over the presence of harmful chemicals in various food items and pressed on the importance of consuming food which is safe for health. Gundurao pointed out the risks posed by unsafe food practices. He cited the findings of a recent investigation conducted by health department officials on Cotton Candy and Gobi Manchurian. The officials collected nearly 171 samples of these food items from various eateries, he said. The findings revealed that around 107 unsafe artificial colours were found in these dishes. …
