The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in several parts of the State on Monday and Tuesday, even as heatwave conditions are expected to persist across many districts. APSDMA Managing Director Prakhar Jain said on Sunday that a trough extending from Karnataka to the Coastal Andhra region is likely to trigger light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in parts of Alluri Sitharama Raju, Polavaram, Kurnool, Nandyal, Anantapur, Sri Sathya Sai and YSR Kadapa districts. Isolated places in other districts are also likely to receive light rain with lightning. Mr. Jain advised people not to take shelter under trees, electric poles or hoardings during thunderstorms. Farmers and cattle rearers have been urged to remain vigilant and move to safer locations at the first sign of thunder or dark clouds. People have also been cautioned against going near fallen electrical wires. Heatwave conditions to intensify in parts of Andhra Pradesh Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority said temperatures remained high across several districts on Wednesday, while weather systems influencing the region could trigger rain and thunderstorm activity in some areas today. “Varied weather conditions are likely to prevail in the state. While heatwave conditions are expected in some areas, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also likely at several places,” SDMA Managing Director Prakhar Jain said in an official release. The rehabilitation works on the Indrakeeladri Ghat Road leading to the Kanaka Durga temple have been temporarily suspended due to extreme weather conditions and intense heatwave prevailing in the city. The repair works, jointly undertaken by the Endowments Department and Roads & Buildings (R&B) Department, commenced on May 26 from the tollgate up to the hilltop road. The authorities had initially planned to complete the works by June 12. However, the R&B Sub-Division Deputy Executive Engineer informed the temple authorities through an official letter on Thursday that the present weather conditions were not suitable for continuing the road rehabilitation works. According to officials, the severe heatwave conditions have made it difficult for field workers to carry out the repairs. Undertaking bitumen and chemical-based road repair works under such extreme heat would not be technically appropriate and could lead to cracks and damage to the road surface. In view of the situation, the R&B Department requested the temple authorities to revise the work schedule until weather conditions return to normal.
